SWAT Season 8: Why Miko And Deacon’s Fight In Episode 10 Is Such A Waste Of Time

Contains spoilers for “S.W.A.T.” Season 8, Episode 10 — “The Heights”

Romantic complications aren’t usually the strong suit of the “S.W.A.T.” writing team. Even at its best in Season 8, things can become quite complex. However, the series has always been more about the camaraderie and familial bond among the team than romantic entanglements. So, the scene in Episode 10, “The Heights,” where Deacon (Jay Harrington) and Miguel “Miko” Alfaro (Niko Pepaj) argue over Miko’s feelings for Deacon’s sister-in-law Nicole (Tory Trowbridge), felt awkward and wasted valuable screen time. This storyline seemed to lead nowhere, offered no additional value to the episode, and dragged on for an hour. It’s hard to believe that the show fought off cancellation for such a plot.

As far as I’m concerned, I’m like the team’s old man, Deacon. He’s got a pair of little ones he’s taking care of now that he and his lady are back to their grind, and one of them is Nicole. She’s been acting just like a teenage rebel when it comes to her thing with Miko. I mean, sneaking around behind my back? That adds some excitement, but it catches up to us when Miko forgets his badge at my place after their secret rendezvous.

Following all the secretive behavior and Miko’s concerns, he eventually reveals the truth to Deacon – yet learns that Deacon was already aware, and is indifferent about their dating, as long as they avoid public displays of affection in front of his children. This redundant storyline seems to lead nowhere – however, it is not uncommon for a 20-Squad member’s romantic entanglements to cause them much greater complications.

There has been plenty of fraternization on S.W.A.T.

It isn’t just Miko who has navigated both dating and work within the 20-Squad family, as Jessica Cortez (Stephanie Sigman) and Hondo (Shemar Moore) also engage in a romantic entanglement during Season 1. Like Miko, they secretly date, but their relationship is exposed when they’re discovered living together by the commissioner in Episode 13. The fallout from this leads to Cortez being written off the show at the end of Season 2, as she goes undercover for the FBI.

As a gamer, I can’t help but reminisce about the rollercoaster ride that was the on-again, off-again relationship between Chris Alonso (Lina Esco) and Jim Street (Alex Russell). This drama unfolded over multiple seasons, leaving us all wondering if they would ever officially become a couple. That moment finally arrived in Season 5, but just as we got used to their dynamic, Chris decided to exit the show.

Jim followed suit during Season 7, relocating to Long Beach and maintaining his relationship with Chris off-screen. These intertwined work and personal connections between the characters made their storyline even more intriguing, but unfortunately, it seemed to overshadow the Deacon and Miko storyline, making it feel somewhat muddled compared to its initial impact.
