If the schedule for movies in 2025 were pinned on my refrigerator door, I’d likely have a prominent red marker mark around “28 Years Later”. Similarly, the second part of this potential trilogy would also get a red circle, especially since “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple” now has a release date in January 2026. Placing them side by side gives the appearance of two eyes infected with rage. Just as I mentioned earlier, I’m genuinely excited about Danny Boyle revisiting this modern horror classic.
This anticipation keeps me constantly scanning for fresh information or updates regarding future installments in the Alex Garland-scripted series. Yet, I can’t help but worry that I might have accidentally unveiled some plot points, potentially revealing the return of a beloved character at the same time as two new characters are exiting the storyline.
Good News: Cillian Murphy’s 28 Years Later Entrance May Have Just Been Revealed
Actor Danny Stafford, also known as “Dr. Kelson’s Double” in his Spotlight resume, appears to have wrapped up his part in Nia DaCosta’s installment within the larger story of 28 Years Later. This information was shared through a Facebook post he made last September, which included mysterious artwork and what seems to be a photo from the set.
During his farewell speech, Mr. Stafford expressed heartfelt thoughts about bringing back beloved actor Cillian Murphy, even slipping in a humorous anecdote from the film set. Although we knew Murphy wasn’t originally part of 28 Years Later, there was still uncertainty about when he would reappear in this trilogy. However, for those deeply immersed in the fan base, some have reportedly spotted potential photos of the star from Oppenheimer, apparently filming his comeback as Jim, on set in various locations.
With Danny Stafford’s reported confirmation, we’re edging closer to verifying that Cillian Murphy may return in “28 Years Later: The Bone Temple.” However, it’s also possible that Nia DaCosta is simply filming an alternative ending scene that could potentially set up a larger role for Jim in the concluding part of the story.
Unfortunately, while there’s been some positive developments, I regret to inform you that we also need to confront some challenging truths that may seem quite obvious now.

Bad News: We May Now Know Two 28 Years Later Characters Who Don’t Make It Out Of The Bone Temple
In my perspective, I wholeheartedly echo Mr. Stafford’s heartfelt gratitude towards the exceptional cast of “28 Years Later,” particularly the remarkable Ralph Fiennes. As Dr. Kelson’s role expands significantly in “The Bone Temple,” I too sense that Round 2 will be a momentous chapter for this enigmatic character, promising an enthralling journey ahead.
Given the expansion of my responsibilities, it seems plausible that Danny Stafford’s dual role was essential for this significant character in the 28 Franchise. This leads me to ponder, could his involvement in the first sequel of 28 Years Later imply that Dr. Kelson meets his end during this journey?
It’s not over yet regarding possible losses, as a significant cast member appears to be missing from Stafford’s post. To be honest, the fact that Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s name is absent in this list of collaborators makes me suspect that his character Jamie might not survive until the final act of “28 Years Later“.

I acknowledge that there’s a lot to discuss here, but please bear in mind that these are just ideas coming from my overly-excited state (Rage-induced brain). However, a recent announcement by the Film & Television Industry Alliance suggests that production for the third installment of the upcoming horror movie trilogy is aiming to start at the end of March. For now, the movie 28 Years Later will set us on our journey to post-apocalyptic England this summer, starting from June 20th.
