It seems that some fans aren’t thrilled about Karl Urban being cast as Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat. Even though he’s a competent actor taking on the part of the arrogant, self-absorbed movie star and martial artist, the responses have been quite varied, to put it mildly.
There’s no need for an introduction when it comes to Urban. He’s undeniably a top-tier talent with a versatile acting ability. However, these days, people may recognize him best as the unruly, vulgar, and intense William “Billy” Butcher from The Boys series.
As a passionate admirer, I can’t help but be thrilled by one of the teaser posters that portrays Cage as the quintessential American action hero. The image is filled with dramatic explosions, motorcycles whizzing past, and our leading man, Johnny, boldly standing out in his sunglasses and leather jacket.
As a gaming enthusiast, I must admit that they’ve certainly nailed the core of Johnny Cage’s character in this new adaptation. However, it seems not everyone is convinced with Urban stepping into the role for a rematch as Johnny Cage in his second major Hollywood Mortal Kombat appearance.
In a surprising show of cordiality among opinionated users on what was once known as Twitter, some express their thoughts politely. For example, one user commented, “I value Urban’s perspective, but I believe the cast selection isn’t quite right.
Many people are advocating for multiple actors to fill the role. Most notably, there’s strong support for current WWE Superstar Michael Mizanin, also known as “The Miz,” who has been playing a character reminiscent of Johnny Cage for about 15 years now.
Another popular cheer from the crowd goes out to Glen Powell from Top Gun Maverick. With his good looks and captivating charm, he seems perfectly suited for the role of Cage, and to add to that, he is notably younger than Urban (52), being only 36 years old.
Despite any concerns about his long-term presence in the series, Mortal Kombat remains open to portraying a weathered and battle-scarred Johnny Cage who has seen more hardships over time.
The Mortal Kombat 2 film release date is set for October 24, a couple of months from now, assuming there are no unexpected hiccups. At present, we haven’t received the official trailer yet.
