The discussion started when journalist BrndnStrssng from Vulture and GQ, using Twitter, expressed his appreciation for Karl Urban but doubted if he’s suitable for the role of Johnny Cage in Mortal Kombat 2. He stated, “I like Karl Urban, but this casting is disastrous on a nuclear level.” He further added that if they were to choose an actor in his forties, it should have been Adkins. This viewpoint seems to be shared by many action and Mortal Kombat fans. WesLara commented, “I rarely support fan casting since people often focus on surface-level aesthetics, but I truly believe the Scott Adkins fan casting was a perfect fit and they couldn’t even manage that.” Brynbikes also agreed, stating, “Scott Adkins was ready for this role.” It seems that there’s something about Adkins that strongly resonates with the character of Johnny Cage.
In addition to Adkins, other potential actors for the role of Johnny Cage have surfaced. Notably, Glen Powell from Top Gun: Maverick and co-stars from The Boys are being considered as more fitting choices for this part. User @EmperorChris446 expresses his opinion that “he’ll probably do well, but I must admit, if they wanted someone from The Boys, Jensen could have nailed the role better. Some speculate that he might be dealing with significant gambling debts, as @punishedyogurt ponders, while @McR1B69 suggests it could have been a matter of convenience for casting, stating, “I can’t fathom how they missed the mark so badly here. Perhaps it was just convenient since it was filmed in Australia. The original had its issues, but the casting was exceptional all around.
