2021 looks set to be an electrifying year for Marvel Studios, with a torrent of thrilling films hitting cinemas and a host of engaging series exclusively on Disney+. The long-awaited comeback of Charlie Cox’s Daredevil is in store, along with several members of the Black Widow family joining forces in Thunderbolts, and the debut of the MCU Fantastic Four. However, before these events unfold, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) takes up the shield for political drama, Captain America: Brave New World, and critics have started sharing their views now that the review embargo has been lifted.
In a recent post by our team member Eric Eisenberg, he gave “Captain America: Brave New World,” directed by Julius Onah, a 2-star rating and described it as “slow and uninteresting.” Despite preferring Phase 2-style stories from the Marvel Cinematic Universe that don’t rely on extensive crossover hype, Eric felt that “Brave New World” lacked any significant twists or unexpected elements. In his review, Eric expressed that he expected more from this film.
The main narrative lacks depth and intrigue; each plot point feels quite rudimentary, offering little more than simplified rehashes of past Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) storylines or elements already shown in trailers.
Brave New World” feels like just another routine stop along the Marvel journey. He describes the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel as less exhilarating and more obligatory. When discussing the challenge a Marvel movie now faces to be unique, Ebiri ponders: “Is it still possible for a Marvel film to make an impact when they all seem so similar?
Initially, Marvel films showcased thrilling, humorous, and imaginative action sequences with groundbreaking visual effects to depict their superheroes’ special abilities. Now, unfortunately, we frequently witness uninspired imitations rather than the originality we once appreciated. This might be due to overexposure (35 films have been made so far), but also a growing tendency towards formulaic storytelling that has become more prevalent in recent years. It seems as though they’ve exhausted every possible move, attack, and escape maneuver.
In my opinion, Marvel movies are meant to be a fun-filled experience, and based on Owen Gleiberman’s review for Variety, Captain America: Brave New World delivers just that with its “straightforward gusto.” Essentially, he suggests that the film has enough energy and excitement to keep an audience engaged.
As a film enthusiast, I found Captain America: Brave New World to be an entertaining diversion, serving as a temporary halt in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ongoing reboot of the Avengers team. It’s not a revolutionary departure from its predecessors, but it manages to offer enough fun to make it worthwhile.
The majority of reviews, including ours, commend the cast. Anthony Mackie is well-received in his role, and Harrison Ford impressively takes on the character of President Thaddeus Ross, a part originally played by the late William Hurt. Additionally, the movie successfully continues the tales initiated by Eternals, The Incredible Hulk, and the Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
In an evaluation penned for Roger Ebert, Robert Daniels awards only one star to “Captain America: Brave New World” and asserts that the movie may not be quite satisfactory.
The whole franchise’s struggle to combine depth with enjoyment results in a disappointing finale that leaves me questioning if any ending from a recent movie has annoyed me more. To be honest, this film lacks courage; it’s the most timid, lacking-in-backbone blockbuster of the past ten years. Instead of boldly venturing into new territories, it seems content with preserving the old ways before even considering the possibility of change.
In the usual fashion, we invite you to form your personal opinions. The movie “Captain America: Brave New World” starts its theater run from February 13 onwards.
