Films such as “The Terminator” and series like “Black Mirror” have instilled in us a sense of apprehension towards machines, particularly the development of artificial intelligence. Yet, there are numerous classic science fiction movies that present a more hopeful outlook on technological advancement by introducing a mechanized entity with a compassionate demeanor. Here are some examples of films featuring robots that resonate deeply with us.
Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (C-3PO And R2-D2)
The Star Wars saga kicks off with C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) and R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) playing crucial roles by delivering a message from Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) to Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness) on the planet Tatooine, as depicted in George Lucas’ 1977 film. This action was instrumental in leading the Rebels to ultimately defeat the Empire. What’s more, these droids exhibit a level of courtesy that is sadly lacking among many beings across any galaxy.

Short Circuit (Johnny 5)
1986’s “Short Circuit” is often labeled as a cult classic, yet some might argue that it falls short (no pun intended). However, the development of Johnny 5, an electrical mishap-turned-sentient robot, and his endearing character, are aspects that few would dispute.

I, Robot (Sonny)
Among Alan Tudyk’s most notable performances is his voice role as Sonny in the 2004 film “I, Robot.” Though this adaptation of Isaac Asimov’s works may display Tudyk’s propensity for violence, it’s important to note that Sonny uses violence solely for the protection and betterment of mankind. Interestingly, Sonny is the only robot who allies with his adversary, Detective Del Spooner (portrayed by Will Smith), in a joint effort against the harmful AI named VIKI.

The Iron Giant (The Iron Giant)
A movie like “The Iron Giant,” directed by Brad Bird, could have potentially won the Best Animated Feature Oscar if the category had been established in 1999. This classic ’50s sci-fi reminiscence features Vin Diesel delivering a moving and powerful performance as the main character – an intelligent alien weapon that becomes friends with 10-year-old Hogarth Hughes (Eli Marienthal), who stumbles upon it when it crashlands on Earth, losing its memory in the process.

Roz (The Wild Robot)
In DreamWorks Animation’s 2024 film based on Peter Brown’s novel, The Wild Robot, Roz (played by Lupita Nyong’o) is designed to be amiable due to her role as a robotic aid. However, an accident leads to her being alone in the wilderness, where she unexpectedly takes on the role of caring for a motherless gosling (voiced by Kit Connor), causing her to modify her original programming.

Transformers (The Autobots)
In reference to the well-known toy franchise and accompanying animated series, the live-action Transformers films narrate the story of two types of alien robots who can transform, namely the Autobots and the Decepticons. As you might have suspected, the latter group is not particularly friendly. When their ancient battle unexpectedly reaches Earth, Optimus Prime (played by Peter Weller) and the Autobots assume responsibility for protecting humans from the chaos.

The Day The Earth Stood Still (Gort)
1951’s sci-fi masterpiece, “The Day the Earth Stood Still“, differs from typical alien invasion films. The extraterrestrial character, Klaatu (Michael Rennie), doesn’t aim to destroy but rather gives humans a dire warning. Accompanying him is a robot named Gort (Lock Martin), who carries a powerful laser weapon primarily for disarmament purposes.

Big Hero 6 (Baymax)
Although Disney’s animated Marvel Comics adaptation titled “Big Hero 6” didn’t win an Oscar for a superhero movie, it would still be cherished within the genre, primarily due to the character Baymax. Scott Adsit lends his voice to this endearing, inflatable healthcare robot, which was invented by Hiro’s deceased father and later teams up with Hiro (Ryan Potter) to form the titular group of vigilantes.

T-800 (Terminator 2: Judgment Day)
In the ’80s, the T-800 portrayed by Arnold Schwarzenegger in James Cameron’s film “The Terminator” was one of the most formidable movie antagonists. However, in the 1991 sequel, due to some reprogramming, his character transforms from a villain into a hero tasked with guarding young John Connor (Eddie Furlong). Despite being a cyborg, he develops an unusual paternal bond with the teenager, who, in turn, influences him to act more human-like.

Wall-E (Wall-E)
In the celebrated Pixar film from 2008, Disney presented one of the cutest robots ever to grace the silver screen – Wall-E. This titular character, voiced by Ben Burtt, is not just eco-friendly due to his role in cleaning up a barren, unlivable Earth in a future dystopia, but he also demonstrates the ability to feel affection, as evidenced when he encounters a more sophisticated bot named EVE (Elissa Knight).

Companion (Iris)
In the film “Companion“, it is not until dire situations arise that Iris (Sophie Thatcher), who unknowingly is a robot, discovers her true nature – being programmed to be deeply in love with her buyer. Furthermore, she was also engineered to experience emotions and physical sensations fully, making her plight as she attempts to break free from her oppressive “partner” all the more heart-wrenching. This compelling tale can be categorized as one of the standout horror movies (“horror adjacent,” for a more accurate description) of 2025.

Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius (Goddard)
2001’s “Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius” and its spin-off series introduced Goddard, the extraordinary dog created by Jimmy himself (voiced by Debi Derryberry). This mechanical pup possesses all the typical pet traits such as barking, fetching, and even playing dead, but in a unique way – it self-explodes for this last trick. However, Goddard is not just any ordinary pet; he’s equipped with numerous advanced tools as well.

A.I.: Artificial Intelligence (David)
Following Stanley Kubrick’s demise, Steven Spielberg took over the direction of “A.I.: Artificial Intelligence“, a film that doesn’t flinch from exploring the possible pitfalls of sentient technology while simultaneously presenting a compelling defense for it. This 2001 futuristic fable follows the journey of David (Haley Joel Osment) – a robot designed to mimic a child, who, after being adopted and later abandoned by human parents, yearns deeply to become a genuine human boy.

The Hitchhiker’s Guide To The Galaxy (Marvin)
In comparison to other robots in pop culture, Marvin from Disney’s 2005 adaptation of “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” is notably more gloomy than most. Unlike many fictional robots, Marvin was played by Warwick Davis and voiced by Alan Rickman. However, it’s not Marvin’s fault that he was given immense intelligence but denied the opportunity to use it effectively.

Finch (Jeff)
Among the most inspiring post-apocalyptic films you’ll encounter is the 2021 Apple TV+ original dramedy, Finch, directed by Miguel Sapochnik. In this movie, Academy Award winner Tom Hanks portrays the protagonist – one of the rare survivors following the devastation of Earth’s ozone layer – who constructs a robot named Jeff (Caleb Landry Jones) to care for his beloved dog, Goodyear (Seamus), once he himself passes away.

Interstellar (TARS And CASE)
In only a Christopher Nolan film could some of its most relatable and charming characters be machines, yet filled with rich personalities to compensate for their lack of human emotion. Josh Stewart lends his voice to the more subdued CASE, while Bill Irwin voices TARS, whose humor may sometimes overstep, but ultimately wins us over through selfless bravery.

Treasure Planet (B.E.N.)
In Robert Louis Stevenson’s popular novel “Treasure Island,” published in 1883, the character Jim Hawkins forms a friendship with Ben Gunn, a castaway from Captain Flint’s pirate crew. This character inspired the creation of B.E.N., an amnesiac robot, in Disney’s space-themed retelling of the story titled “Treasure Planet,” released in 2002, with Martin Short providing the voice for this character.

Earth To Echo (Echo)
If Steven Spielberg had filmed E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial as a found footage movie featuring a sentient alien robot rather than a living creature, the end product could resemble the 2014 sci-fi family film Earth to Echo. In this film, a group of kids uncover the title character, an intelligent android with telekinetic abilities, and agree to assist it in its journey back home.

Robots (Rodney Copperbottom)
Back in 2005, I found myself captivated by the stunningly beautiful world of Blue Sky Studios’ animated film, “Robots.” Each character in this movie was a thoughtful mechanical creation, but it’s clear that some were simply more charming than others. Take Rodney Copperbottom (Ewan McGregor), his pals Cappy (Halle Berry) and Fender (Robin Williams), for instance – they were crafted with hearts as warm as their metallic bodies, in stark contrast to the cold-hearted ambition of Phineas T. Ratchet (Greg Kinnear).

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (K-2SO)
It took several characters from the Star Wars universe a considerable amount of time to switch allegiance and oppose the Empire. An exceptional example is K-2SO, the endearing imperial droid voiced by Alan Tudyk in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016). With just a bit of reprogramming, he transformed into one of the Rebel Alliance’s most reliable comrades.

Star Kid (Cy)
The mechanical gadget hailing from the 1997 sci-fi film Star Kid, unlike conventional robots, is essentially an AI-controlled exoskeleton or “cybersuit” (voiced by Arthur Burghardt and represented on set by Alex Daniels). This is why the timid 13-year-old Spencer Griffith (Joseph Mazzello) dubbed it “Cy” upon finding it in a scrapyard and trying it out.

Batteries Not Included (The Fix-Its)
In most movies, flying saucers are portrayed as large spacecraft inhabited by extraterrestrial beings. However, the 1987 film “Batteries Not Included” takes a different approach, where the aliens themselves assume the form of smaller, saucer-shaped devices called Fix-Its. The residents of a Manhattan apartment building give these helpful, otherworldly mechanical duo this nickname due to their ability to fix things around the building.

D.A.R.Y.L. (Daryl)
Initially, Daryl (Barret Oliver) appears as a typical, if somewhat socially awkward, 10-year-old boy, but his foster family soon discovers he possesses an extraordinary intellect that’s more than just childlike brilliance. This young boy is actually a highly advanced “Data-Analyzing Robot Youth Lifeform” created by the U.S. Government, as depicted in the 1985 sci-fi movie called D.A.R.Y.L.

Alita: Battle Angel (Alita)
Among the overlooked superhero films from its era, the standout is 2019’s “Alita: Battle Angel” – a cinematic interpretation of Yukito Kishiro’s manga series produced by James Cameron and directed by Robert Rodriguez. In this film, Rosa Salazar portrays the protagonist, a cyborg character, who embarks on a quest to discover her past after being reactivated by a professor (portrayed by Christoph Waltz), who stumbles upon her remains in a junkyard.

Ron’s Gone Wrong (Ron Bintscatsco)
In the 2021 animated movie titled “Ron’s Gone Wrong“, Barney (Jack Dylan Grazer) desires to be part of his peers by acquiring the trendiest digital gadget, known as a B-bot. Eventually obtaining one for himself, which he names Ron (Zach Galifianakis), it turns out to be as amiable as he expected but also presents some issues and malfunctions that make him more of a hassle than help.

The Creator (Alphie)
2023’s dystopian thriller, “The Creator,” directed by Gareth Edwards and co-written, has John David Washington portraying a special forces operative on a mission to find and neutralize an artificial intelligence weapon. However, upon finding that the weapon is a cyborg girl named Alpha-O who looks like a young girl, whom he affectionately calls “Alphie” (played by Madeleine Yuna Voyles), he defies his orders and decides to safeguard her instead.

Robot & Frank (Robot)
In simpler terms, not many movies show as positive a perspective on humanity’s relationship with machines as the 2012 sci-fi comedy-drama “Robot & Frank”. This film features Frank Langella as an old man who is afraid of technology and has dementia. To help him cope, he gets a robotic assistant, which he initially resists but eventually grows to like. His son brings this robot to him, and it turns out to be useful during a jewelry heist they carry out together. The robot on set was played by Rachael Ma, while Peter Sarsgaard provided its voice.

I’m Your Man (Tom)
It’s possible that you might find yourself considering the idea of falling in love with a robot after watching the 2021 German sci-fi rom-com, “I’m Your Man.” English actor Dan Stevens honed his German skills to portray Tom, a robot created to fulfill a woman’s deepest desires. Scientist Alma Felser (played by Maren Eggert) consents to live with this robot for three weeks as part of a research project to fund her next venture.

Bicentennial Man (Andrew)
In the 1999 film adaptation titled “Bicentennial Man,” directed by Chris Columbus, Robin Williams portrays a robot named Andrew, who was given this name by his human family. Over time, Andrew sets out on a journey to locate others like him and ultimately yearns to transform into a human being.

Astro Boy (Astro Boy)
In essence, Astro Boy, derived from a popular manga, is a tale about a robot, lent Freddie Highmore’s voice, who was created by Dr. Bill Tenma (Nicolas Cage) using memories of his deceased son. Over time, this robot with childlike qualities ventures out on his own and emerges as a remarkable hero.

Chappie (Chappie)
In the 2015 science fiction action movie directed by Neill Blomkamp, titled Chappie, an ingenious engineer (portrayed by Dev Patel) uncovers a method to develop an artificially intelligent being resembling a human. When this intelligence is transferred into a robot chassis, it must start understanding life from the very beginning, similar to a newborn child. This robot, lent voice by Sharlto Copley, receives distorted life lessons from a duo of criminals, who happen to be South African hip hop artists known as Die Antwoord.

And You Thought Your Parents Were Weird (Newman)
In 1991, the comedy movie titled “And You Thought Your Parents Were Weird” tells a story about two siblings, Joshua Miller and Edan Gross, who create an intelligent robot using a vacuum cleaner, which they name Newman. To their astonishment, this machine starts housing the spirit of their deceased father, portrayed by Alan Thicke.
