Starfleet Academy Season 1 Wraps: Are These Cast Posts Hinting at a New Uniform?

A thrilling piece of news has surfaced about the forthcoming Star Trek series, as Starfleet Academy edges nearer to its debut on streaming platforms like Paramount+. The cast is already rejoicing over completing Season 1, and although I’m looking forward to it myself, I can’t help but wonder about the branded apparel and other merchandise featured in the snapshots.

The first captivating post I saw was by actress Bella Shepard, one of the new talents in Starfleet Academy. Take a look at what she shared on Instagram, and don’t miss the emblem on her stylish letterman jacket!

Letterman jackets are iconic in American high schools, and since Starfleet Academy represents their closest equivalent to high school, it makes sense that they would appear in the series. However, given that Star Trek: Discovery took place in the 31st century, these jackets seem quite different from what was worn at that time. It’s unclear if this is official merchandise or a prop gift for the actors. Bella Sherpard’s jacket, which bears the official show logo, has me questioning whether it’s just a wrap gift or something more official. I initially assumed it was a prop, but now I’m not so sure.

The enigma grew even more intriguing as I stumbled upon a social media post by Zoë Steiner, featuring another iconic item associated with the American educational system, bearing the mark of Starfleet Academy. Here are some images she shared:

Once more, it’s a cool gadget and I really like it, but it’s not quite what I’d anticipate in a Star Trek series. Although it’s typical for Trek shows to change uniforms and styles between series, I doubt they would go as far as reintroducing 20th-century high school fashion for the future-set series.

While I wouldn’t be against them making that choice, I personally find it more likely that these items are mementos left for the stars as reminders of the show, not actual costumes intended for the production.

Star Trek Might’ve Lost A Lot Of Shows In 2024, But A Promising Stat Has Me Psyched For The Future

Regardless, I’m quite fond of the design on the garments and flags, and I can’t help but hope that Starfleet Academy might be included in the 2025 TV lineup. Sadly, the extensive post-production work required for Star Trek series seems to make this a long shot, and we may not get to see actors like Robert Picardo and others until around 2026.

It appears that Paramount+ is heavily investing in the Starfleet Academy series, given the impressive acting talent they’ve gathered. The fact that Oscar-winner Holly Hunter was on board already had me excited, but adding Paul Giamatti to the team simply sealed the deal for me. I can only hope that the show will be as popular as these casting choices and provide us with another longstanding Star Trek series to become engrossed in.

We’re yet to receive an official release date for the much-anticipated series, Starfleet Academy, but its debut on Paramount+ is something we’re eagerly looking forward to. In the meantime, there are a plethora of classic shows available on streaming services for your viewing pleasure. You might even want to catch up on one of the fantastic films in the interim.

Letterman jackets are iconic in American high schools, much like how Starfleet Academy’s setting mirrors a high school environment. However, the style of clothing seen in Star Trek: Discovery’s 31st century seems quite different from these jacket styles.

Is it intended that the jackets match the costumes from the show, or are they simply gifts for cast members to wear outside of their roles? At first, I thought they were just gifts, but the presence of the official show logo on Bella Sherpard’s jacket is causing me to question this assumption.

My curiosity grew even stronger when I stumbled upon Zoë Steiner’s post, revealing yet another iconic item associated with American education. Have a look at the images she shared, featuring a traditional pennant emblazoned with the Starfleet Academy logo:
