Warning: This article contains spoilers for Cobra Kai Season 6 Pt. 3
The popular series “Cobra Kai” recently released its last five episodes, but fans need not worry as there’s still more to come from this franchise. Two beloved characters from the show could potentially star in their own spin-off. Originally designed as a sequel to “The Karate Kid,” with returning stars William Zabka and Ralph Macchio being a significant draw, “Cobra Kai” expanded its cast to introduce an array of new favorites. Among them are Miguel Diaz, Samantha LaRusso, Robby Keene, and Tory Nichols, and it seems that two characters from the first season might be getting their own series.
During an interview with Entertainment Weekly regarding the final episodes of Cobra Kai, creators Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz, and Hayden Schlossberg discussed possible spin-offs. One intriguing concept brought up by Kristen Baldwin was the friendship between Hawk (Jacob Bertrand) and Demetri (Gianni DeCenzo) at Caltech, which seems plausible. Heald hinted, “That might be something we’ve already discussed.” Hurwitz then chimed in, “It feels like she’s taken our notes! There could actually be a detailed plan, one that closely matches what you mentioned.
In Season 1 of “Cobra Kai,” Eli, known later as Hawk, and Demetri were depicted as friends of Miguel Diaz, a pair of nerdy companions initially. Hawk adopted the ideology of Cobra Kai, transforming his appearance with a mohawk to overcome feelings of weakness or fear. Conversely, Demetri initially shunned combat but eventually proved himself a formidable fighter using Miyagi-do style techniques. Their friendship experienced ups and downs throughout the series, frequently finding themselves on opposing sides in karate matches. However, as the series concluded, they were shown packing their car to embark on a journey to Caltech together, ready to start college.
‘The Karate Kid’ Franchise Is Expanding Into the MiyagiVerse
Although no definite plans have been announced about the future direction of Cobra Kai, its creators have expressed their desire to carry on the narrative with potential spin-offs. The last sixteen episodes of Cobra Kai appear to be designed with plotlines that could easily lead to a standalone series. For instance, Sam LaRusso’s plan to study in Okynawa, a budding romance between Chozen and Kim Da-Eun, and Hawk and Demetri attending Caltech are just a few examples of many stories yet to be told. The creators and fans refer to this interconnected universe as the MiyagiVerse, suggesting ample opportunities for character crossovers.
The first major expansion of this franchise is slated for later this summer with the premiere of “Karate Kid: Legends“, marking 15 years since a new film has been released in theaters within the series. “Karate Kid: Legends” will have limited, if any, links to “Cobra Kai“. The story unfolds two years after the events of the series and primarily revolves around Daniel LaRusso joining forces with Jackie Chan’s character, Mr. Han from the 2010 “Karate Kid” movie, to mentor a new pupil. Despite the success or failure of the film, given the immense popularity of “Cobra Kai” on Netflix, it seems highly probable that they will seek opportunities to prolong the brand. As the saying goes, “Cobra Kai” shall endure forever.
