Netflix has unfortunately been known for some exceptional series that were cut short after just one season, ending prematurely. Shows like “Dash & Lily” could have benefited from additional time to grow and reach their intended audience. In this show, two teenagers, Dash (portrayed by Austin Abrams) and Lily (Midori Francis), communicate solely through a red notebook. As they engage in friendly competition, they also find themselves falling for each other, creating an intimate bond despite limited face-to-face interaction.
I absolutely loved the Christmas programming on Netflix, and I was instantly captivated by the show “Dash & Lily“. I believe it ranks among Netflix’s finest teen romantic TV series. Unfortunately, its cancellation came as a blow to me. Since I missed it dearly, I made up my mind to read the “Dash & Lily” book series instead.
I breezed through the initial pair of books, but the second one fell short for me, so I postponed diving into the last installment. However, during the recent winter season, I made up my mind to finish off the Rachel Cohn and David Levithan book collection at last.
I ended up deeply missing the former Netflix dramedy and wishing I saw several things happen in it.
Warning Dash & Lily book series and TV show spoilers are ahead. Proceed with caution.
Dash and Lily’s Relationship Struggles
Season 1 of Dash & Lily concludes with a multitude of unanswered questions, primarily revolving around the fate of their relationship. Throughout the show, we witness Dash and Lily growing and evolving through sparse interactions. Their bond, built on written exchanges, thrives in the abstract, but how will it hold up against the trials of reality? The subsequent books in the Dash & Lily series delve into this intriguing dilemma.
In their relationship, they encounter significant difficulties, one of which is a common challenge for many young adults: managing college life. Eventually, Dash and Lily choose different educational paths. Dash ventures overseas, while Lily remains in New York City. The story follows how they handle the major obstacle of long-distance, as well as other dramatic events that unfold in their lives.
It was intriguing to see the strong connection between Midori Francis and Austin Abrams in their limited scenes together on Dash & Lily. It would have been exciting to witness that rapport develop further into a romantic relationship for their characters in future seasons, providing us with heartwarming romantic scenes akin to popular rom-coms, as well as the challenges and growth that come with any relationship. The book series offers plenty of such complexities that could have been explored.

Their London Adventures
In the story titled “Mind the Gap, Dash & Lily,” our protagonists, book-loving Dash and New York-dwelling Lily, are set in the vibrant city of London. Enchanted by its charm, Dash initially intends to further his studies at Oxford University. On the other hand, Lily opts for a gap year, planning to enroll in a college back in her hometown, New York, later on.
However, Dash finds that Oxford doesn’t meet his expectations, and he struggles with his college experience. Meanwhile, Lily feels a longing for Dash and decides to surprise him with an unexpected visit during the Christmas season.
In the subsequent chapters, they primarily share their time in London. Despite their romantic encounter not unfolding as anticipated, numerous instances showcase the charm of the city and Europe overall. Given the popularity of series such as “Emily in Paris,” a London spin-off for “Dash & Lily” could have been quite entertaining. This is particularly true if Netflix capitalized on this opportunity to orchestrate an exciting crossover episode, similar to their past endeavors. Such a move would not only benefit “Dash & Lily,” but also any other series set in Europe, or even characters from different shows who might be in London at the same time. For instance, envision Dash and Lily crossing paths with Charlie (Joe Locke) and Nick (Kit Connor) from “Heartstopper.
The last season of Dash & Lily, set in London, had immense possibilities. Apart from the storyline from the book, Netflix’s connection to the city offered potential opportunities to intertwine and strengthen their fictional worlds. It would have been adorable to watch Dash and Lily discovering London together, deepening their affection for each other.

Lily Becoming A Dog Influencer
Over the course of her break year, Lily gains significant fame as a well-known canine influencer. She earns a substantial income by walking dogs and marketing pet merchandise. Her success is so notable that she ponders relocating to London for educational opportunities tied to her dog-influencing career. While her family isn’t fond of this idea, the book concludes by highlighting Lily’s deep affection for animals and her remarkable ability to comprehend them.
This aids her in discovering her professional journey. A job as a dog influencer isn’t often portrayed on popular TV shows. It would have been fascinating to witness this unique career path featured in Dash & Lily. Similarly, Lily experiences numerous animal-related escapades in the series Mind the Gap, Dash & Lily. I can easily visualize how engaging it would be if such scenes made it onto the Netflix show.

Dash And Lily’s Tribute To Books
The affection for books has consistently defined the very core and texture of Dash & Lily, and they play a significant role both in the novels and the television adaptation. Consequently, I found myself yearning to witness more of this aspect developed across subsequent seasons. Regrettably, there aren’t many TV shows that focus on book lovers, particularly teenagers, so showcasing this element further could have been an appealing feature of the series.
The series “Dash & Lily” might have complemented the Netflix Book Club well, as it could have showcased books from the TV series and possibly chosen one of them as the book of the month. While Netflix no longer appears to have a book club, the concept could have been revived for “Dash & Lily”, given that it ran for three seasons (2020-2022). It’s worth noting that Netflix’s book club was still active at least until November 2023, aligning with the potential timeline of “Dash & Lily”.
Furthermore, Netflix continues to feature a literary club platform showcasing some of their original shows based on novels. By incorporating the popular series “Dash & Lily” into this platform, it could further emphasize the joy of reading and books, aligning with Netflix’s existing book club to champion literature promotion.

Sofia And Boomer’s Relationship Progression
At the conclusion of Season 1 of Dash & Lily, one significant surprise and lingering question revolved around the romantic bond between Sofia (Keana Marie) and Boomer (Dante Brown). Throughout the series, hints of their romantic involvement were subtly revealed, but it was still a startling moment when they’re seen intertwining fingers in the final episode. Fans rooting for Boomer and Sofia will be delighted to discover that their love story continues to flourish in the final book of Dash & Lily.
They are an incredibly powerful pair whose continued story I eagerly await in potential new seasons of the show “Dash and Lily“. Despite their contrasting personalities, Boomer and Sofia manage to complement each other in a way reminiscent of Dash and Lily.

The Dash and Lily Netflix Series Could Have Become A Christmas Tradition
Every year, Netflix offers an abundance of fantastic Christmas films. While they don’t necessarily require a new Christmas TV series to establish a tradition, I personally crave more. Specifically, I was eagerly anticipating three seasons of the show Dash and Lily, which used to air during the holiday season.
Over the next few years, it would have been something delightful to anticipate. Reading these books, filled with such festive joy, made me especially enjoy them around Christmastime. They certainly heightened my holiday spirit. Similarly, the series could have provided that same warm and cozy feeling.
I’m still upset that Netflix’s show Dash & Lily was cancelled prematurely. Even though I can only imagine what additional episodes might have offered, I’m grateful for having read the series, as it helped me bridge some of those unanswered questions.
