Fans Were Bummed When House Of The Dragon Skipped A Huge Battle Scene In Season 2. Turns Out, They Needed A Guy Who Worked On Titanic To Complete It

In the TV lineup for 2024, House of the Dragon concluded its second season. The finale linked strongly back to Game of Thrones, with various branches of the Targaryen family tree aiming to eliminate some adversaries. Over eight episodes, Season 2 fell short by two installments compared to Season 1’s ten-episode arc, missing out on a grand climax like the Battle of the Gullet. HBO will compensate for this with the commencement of Season 3, as Francesca Orsi, Head of Drama Series and Films at HBO, hinted at major events… or, to put it another way, events as significant as the Titanic.

Fans of George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood” might have anticipated a spectacular sea battle to climax the second season, offering a more grandiose conclusion than the unfortunate event dubbed the “Blood and Cheese” in the premiere. To avoid spoilers for those yet uninitiated, a grand sea battle would have left viewers of the Blacks and/or Greens eagerly anticipating the next installment over the hiatus. However, as per HBO executive Francesca Orsi, the postponement of the Battle of the Gullet will yield a rewarding payoff in “House of the Dragon” Season 3. Orsi disclosed this information to Deadline.

It turns out the delay was worth it! Today, I got a glimpse of everything on set, and let me tell you, there’s so much more than meets the eye. I’m thrilled that we held off because this season will surpass all expectations – something I don’t believe we could have accomplished at the earlier stage.

In Season 2, we witnessed an intense clash at Rook’s Rest, culminating in Rhaenys’ demise, but it seems the Battle of the Gullet is poised to outshine these events significantly. If you’re eager to re-live Season 2, including the epic showdown at Rook’s Rest, you can stream it with a Max subscription now. On a personal note, I’m excited by the hint that this upcoming battle will incorporate tangible special effects, as evidenced by Orsi’s praise of what she observed on set.

Given that the dragons in House of the Dragon are likely to be mostly computer-generated imagery (CGI), it’s intriguing to note that remarks from HBO executives hint at the potential inclusion of some engaging practical effects. As Orsi mentioned, a veteran from the film Titanic might be brought in, suggesting an interesting blend of technology and hands-on craftsmanship.

Building something as immense required careful planning and time, which we took. One of the key figures involved in its production, Kevin de la Noy, also worked on the Titanic. This means he has a deep understanding of what transpired on the Titanic, along with insights into how that experience was constructed. He brings this valuable expertise to our project.

Reflecting upon the captivating tsunami crisis depicted in 9-1-1 during its 2019 broadcast on television, which bore a striking resemblance to the Titanic, it’s heartening to think that the delay in airing Battle of the Gullet may have given the producers additional time to make it a success. As someone who eagerly awaited the arrival of Fire & Blood, I can’t help but feel a sense of anticipation rather than frustration about the delay. Even though Season 2 concluded with a more muted ending compared to the dramatic finale one might expect from a show fueled by dragons, the promise of an epic start for Season 3 certainly piques my interest.

As a film enthusiast, I must admit that while “Blood and Cheese” may have been a softer version compared to the original title “Fire & Blood“, I’m confident that the aftermath of this battle will be nothing short of intriguing. The momentum seems to be building up nicely, even without an immediate break following this clash. It’s clear that beyond this single battle, there are more bloodshed and conflicts yet to unfold in the ongoing war between the Greens and the Blacks. I find myself pondering over how subsequent battles, such as the Battle of the Honeywine following a recent casting decision, will measure up against what we’ve already seen.

Production for Season 3 hasn’t started yet, so viewers may have to wait a bit longer before they can watch any completed footage from future battles. However, a new spinoff titled “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” is set to premiere as part of HBO’s 2025 TV lineup, meaning we’ll return to the world of Westeros before the year ends.
