Spoiler Warning: This Article Contains Major Spoilers for Captain America: Brave New World.
The latest installment of Captain America, titled “Captain America: Brave New World,” has hit theaters and seems to be stirring up mixed reactions. Its Rotten Tomatoes rating, ahead of an anticipated successful opening weekend at the box office, is somewhat underwhelming. In this new Captain America film, Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson takes on the role as Captain America, seeking to expose a conspiracy after an attempt on President Thaddeus Ross’ life (portrayed by Harrison Ford). This Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) production has close connections to the MCU’s history, with plot points referencing Phase 1 film “The Incredible Hulk” and upcoming titles such as “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” “Black Widow,” and “Eternals.
In “Captain America: Brave New World,” we find a story steeped in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s history, yet it also gazes ahead, with its finale suggesting major changes that may redefine the franchise. Keep an eye out as the movie concludes with just one post-credit scene. Don’t leave too quickly! Here is the interpretation of that final scene and the current status of the MCU following the events in “Captain America: Brave New World.
The Film’s Ending and Post Credits Scene
Toward the movie’s conclusion, Sam Wilson makes a trip to see Thaddeus Ross, who is incarcerated in The Raft, a penitentiary built for individuals with superpowers, following his destructive Red Hulk phase. Despite his actions, Ross chose to surrender, allowing the nation to recover, and Sam Wilson, who still believes in Ross’s inherent goodness, arranges for his daughter, Betty (played by Liv Tyler), to pay him a visit. This encounter marks Betty’s first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2008’s The Incredible Hulk. After years apart, they have a heartwarming reunion.
Towards the end of the movie, Sam Wilson pays a visit to his comrade, Danny Ramirez’s character (who goes by the Falcon in the story), at the hospital. Earlier in the film, during an intense action sequence near Celestial Island, he got severely injured and was on the brink of death. Sam Wilson conveys to Joaquin that the world requires the Avengers, choosing to regroup the team with Joaquin Torres as his inaugural recruit.
After the end credits finish playing, the scene shifts back to The Raft prison, where Sam Wilson is visiting Samuel Sterns, aka The Leader (Tim Blake Nelson). Ever since the incidents in The Incredible Hulk, Ross had been keeping Sterns imprisoned at an off-site facility. Ross exploited Sterns’ enhanced intelligence for his own benefit, even using it to save his life during the heart attack mentioned in Captain America: Civil War. With his heightened intellect, Sterns could foresee almost every possible outcome of a situation. By allowing himself to be captured, he revealed Ross’ hidden deceit to the public, causing Ross to grow angry and transform into the Red Hulk. The Red Hulk emerged due to the gamma radiation pills that Sterns had been administering to Ross, whose body contained low levels of gamma radiation.
Once more apprehended, Sterns delivers a dual message to Sam Wilson – a warning and a threat. Subtly alluding to an impending danger, he says: “There’s something looming on the horizon.
You and I inhabit the same universe, don’t we? A universe that you would give your life for. It’s on its way, and I’ve glimpsed it in the possibilities, as clear as broad daylight. All these brave souls guarding this universe of ours. Do you think you are the only ones doing so? Do you think there is only one universe to protect? We’ll discover what happens when you must defend this realm…from others.
Although it may appear confusing and aggravating to many casual viewers (and indeed, it can be), it appears to lay the groundwork for the upcoming MCU crossover titled “Avengers: Endgame“.
What Threat Is Coming?
Stern’s hint at a multiversal danger certainly sparks curiosity among fans. It is widely accepted that Doctor Doom serves as the chief antagonist in the Multiverse Saga, potentially being a foe originating from the reality depicted in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, posing a threat to the primary MCU. However, Sterns refers to “The Others,” suggesting that there may be multiple threats looming on the horizon beyond Doctor Doom.
Initially, it seemed like a remnant from the original Multiverse Saga concepts, hinting at the introduction of The Council of Kangs in “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.” However, these plans were abandoned after Marvel Studios dismissed Jonathan Majors in December 2023 following his conviction for domestic assault. Given the numerous reshoots “Captain America: Brave New World” underwent, particularly those carried out post-Majors’ dismissal, it’s unlikely that Disney and Marvel Studios would have preserved a reference to The Council of Kangs. As a result, we can speculate that Doctor Doom may not be appearing solo when he arrives; instead, he might be accompanied by his own sinister variant of The Avengers, the Dark Avengers.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been buzzing with excitement over the rumors that Chris Evans might reprise his role in “Avengers: Doomsday.” However, it appears that this time around, he won’t be donning the shield as Steve Rogers/Captain America we all know and love. Instead, a chilling twist suggests he could portray the malevolent Hydra version of Captain America – a character introduced in Marvel Comics back in 2016 and known as the Hydra Supreme.
If Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom is any indication, it seems that the new Avengers cast may find themselves battling not just external threats but also the sinister reflections of their former selves. This tantalizing premise has me pondering – could this pave the way for the emergence of the evil future Hulk known as Maestro? Or perhaps the Thor clone, Ragnarok? The possibilities are intriguingly plausible!
There’s also a possibility that they could be Earth 10005’s equivalent of the X-Men, as hinted in Deadpool & Wolverine, and potentially The Marvels. In the Secret Wars comic, the impending threat of incursions reduced the multiverse to just two surviving realities, forcing them to fight for survival. While the comics pitted the original 616 Marvel Comics universe against the Ultimate Marvel Comics reality, Avengers: Doomsday could depict the MCU’s 616 reality battling the X-Men of Earth 10005, making Avengers: Doomsday a possible adaptation of Avengers vs. X-Men, a theory we’ve been discussing for quite some time now. With the Avengers and X-Men engaged in their mutual conflict, Doctor Doom is left free to carry out his nefarious schemes.
In summary, there’s another significant theory circulating about the potential characters appearing in “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”. This film, preceding “Avengers: Doomsday”, might introduce Galactus and the Silver Surfer. Galactus, a world-devourer, could pose a greater multiversal threat within the MCU. It’s speculated that “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” will present Franklin Richards, an Omega-Level mutant with reality manipulation abilities. This could imply that Galactus might exploit the young boy’s powers to traverse dimensions, consuming more worlds and establishing his presence within the MCU.
The Avengers Now Know About the multiverse…but Who Are The Avengers Now?
In the narrative, Sam Wilson learns about the concept of other worlds, implying the Multiverse, a fact that may seem familiar to viewers. However, it’s novel information for Captain America and many of the Avengers since they don’t frequently interact with those who possess extensive knowledge about the Multiverse and its potential dangers. For instance, Doctor Strange has been out of reach, last seen venturing into the Dark Dimension with Clea. Additionally, it appears that even the Avengers have forgotten Peter Parker’s alter ego, Spider-Man. Meanwhile, Deadpool and Wolverine are residing in another universe, and Loki reigns over his throne at the end of time, maintaining the delicate balance of the multiverse.
In a somewhat surprising twist for many viewers, despite the growing skepticism towards multiverse narratives in popular media, the multiverse concept presents an intriguing example of dramatic irony – the audience is aware of this impending danger far more than the main characters. While events spanning across various universes and the potential threats of incursions occur behind the scenes for heroes like Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Hawkeye, Shang-Chi, Black Panther, and She-Hulk, they remain oblivious to these happenings. For instance, Captain Marvel understands that Monica Rambeau is missing and might be in another reality, but lacks the knowledge of how to find her. Conversely, only Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne are privy to some information about an approaching peril, yet even the ending of “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” downplays this threat as something they may not fully comprehend its significance.
Given this information, it’s quite logical that Sam Wilson would aim to revamp The Avengers, a team that seems to be forming prior to the beginning of “Avengers: Doomsday.” However, we don’t yet know the full lineup of members. As of now, only two individuals have been confirmed: Sam Wilson as Captain America and Joaquin Torres as Falcon. But one can’t help but wonder who else might join this team. The film doesn’t explicitly reveal any names, but there are subtle hints scattered throughout that may offer clues.
It’s reasonable to assume that Sam Wilson will attempt to collaborate with heroes he has a prior working relationship with. Since Ant-Man was mentioned twice in Captain America: Brave New World, it seems likely that his partner, The Wasp, will be included on the recruitment list. Given Sam Wilson’s past interactions with the Wakandans, there’s a chance Shuri or even The Black Panther might receive a call. It’s worth noting that at the end of The Marvels, Carol Danvers moved to New Orleans, where Sam Wilson resides. This could lead to a potential collaboration between him and Captain Marvel. As all these heroes have a history of working together, it would be more straightforward for them to team up without extensive introductions, as seen in The Avengers or Avengers: Infinity War.
The State of the MCU at This Point in Time
In “Captain America: Brave New World”, we witness several hints about the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s future development. Towards the end of the movie, Thaddeus Ross resigns as U.S. President, but his successor is left unnamed. Since the fate of President James Ritson from “Secret Invasion” remains undisclosed and this film overlooks it altogether, the United States has experienced considerable political upheaval in the MCU’s recent years post-Blip. This situation paves the way for the next MCU installment, “Thunderbolts”.
In the middle of “Captain America: Brave New World”, Sam Wilson is unexpectedly paid a visit by none other than Bucky Barnes, also known as The Winter Soldier. The film hints at his upcoming role as a congressman, a detail that has been previously confirmed for “Thunderbolts”. It’s worth noting that the Super Bowl trailer for “Thunderbolts”, released four days before “Captain America: Brave New World” hit theatres, indicates that in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Avengers had not yet formed by the time of the movie’s events.
In summary, the movie “Captain America: Brave New World” introduces the unbreakable metal known as Adamantium into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This significant metal, associated with Wolverine from the X-Men, was transformed into stone by Sersi in Eternals from the remains of a Celestial named Tiamut. The title of the film is indicative of its plot, as this metal is expected to pave the way for a new era within the MCU, with numerous countries worldwide gaining control over this precious resource. Although The Avengers may be dealing with multiversal threats for the next two years, Adamantium is predicted to hold significant influence during Phase 7, which is already being speculated as having a heavy X-Men focus.
The Captain America films have consistently served as pillars, helping to establish plotlines for upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) productions. For instance, “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” paved the way for “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” while the finale of “Captain America: Civil War” gave birth to “Black Panther,” “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Black Widow,” and “Avengers: Infinity War.” Similarly, “Captain America: Brave New World,” with its Tom Clancy-esque elements, is instrumental in setting the stage for potential movies like “Thunderbolts” and “Avengers: Doomsday,” contributing to the future of both the Avengers and The X-Men within the MCU.
