One aspect that possibly attracted numerous individuals to Avowed was the concept of Skyrim, yet enhanced with gunplay. Indeed, Avowed bears resemblance to Skyrim and other renowned RPGs (with an inclusion of gunplay, although it may not be crucial for an exceptional gaming experience).
In another scenario, imagine exploring a realm similar to Skyrim, yet bursting with vibrant mushrooms, enhancing the immersion into an extraordinary fantasy universe filled with decay and a malaise affecting the spirits. As a divine entity, your task is to endeavor to reestablish harmony in this world once more, eradicating the rot before it becomes irreversible.
Review
Stacey Henley, our Editor-in-Chief here at top-mob.com shared her review for Avowed, and she was not overly impressed. Despite warnings from the director about Avowed possibly being a little “jank,” the unfinished feeling of Avowed stems from issues on a “deeper, and unfortunately far less fixable” level.
In every direction you venture within Avowed, it seems like you’ve hit a brick wall. The game aspires to reach profound depths, yet it oversteps its bounds in pursuit of this depth.
Stacey observes that the roleplay elements in Avowed seem more like an optical illusion compared to a true roleplay experience, as nothing appears to have any long-term impact. Moreover, the storyline leans heavily on well-worn tropes, leaving Stacey feeling unsatisfied rather than intrigued by the narrative.
When it moves past its typical storylines, it seems as though the game struggles to navigate the plot. In other words, Stacey said, “It makes Avowed feel like playing Dungeons & Dragons with a game master who has a great voice but isn’t very skilled at crafting the narrative.
In Avowed, the narrative might wobble when it strays from well-worn storylines and predictable pasts, but the gameplay is quite good. It offers versatility in combat styles, urging you to combine your weapons to create a distinct gaming experience for yourself. However, the combat could feel a bit unwieldy at times.
In this game, since there isn’t a strict class system, you can tailor your character by selecting skills freely, creating distinct character compositions – essentially, designing custom character profiles. However, certain abilities might seem repetitive, making it necessary to have a broad skill set (which could benefit some players. For Stacey, she preferred this setup).
Everything seems to move at a snail’s pace and requires patience to fully engage, which can be problematic when you’re in the heat of battle. It becomes even more frustrating when you’re stuck in lengthy discussions that lack engaging dialogue or compelling characters to liven things up.
This game is an average attempt at replicating a true masterwork, yet it still holds its ground as just another common video game.
In the end, Stacey concludes her thoughts by pointing out that you’ll find yourself compelled to complete Avowed, yet you won’t quite grasp why you feel this urge. Despite its flaws, you can’t resist delving deeper into it. The game shows potential and is a commendable effort at creating a fantasy world, but it bites off more than it can chew, and its storyline fails to resonate.
Time Expenditure

If your attention is primarily on the main plot, you’re likely to complete it within approximately 20 hours, though exploring some additional missions might add to that. Generally speaking, a typical gamer can expect to spend around 40 hours engaging with Avowed.
If you aim to fully master the game, you’re likely looking at around 50 to 60 hours, give or take. It’s a game that can be completed within a weekend if you choose to devote your entire weekend to it.
Cost

The game titled “Avowed” isn’t exactly budget-friendly, priced at a hefty $69.99 for the standard version on Steam and Xbox Series X|S. If you happen to have some extra spending money and are ready for it, you can opt for the premium edition, which sets you back $89.99 – post-tax, that’s definitely more than $90.
Although Avowed is part of the Xbox Game Pass, if you’re a member, consider yourself lucky – it’s an economical method to test out Avowed at a significantly reduced cost ($11.99 for PC and $19.99 for the Ultimate Pass) before deciding to purchase it if you enjoy the game.
What Players Are Saying
Not For That Much Money – Tallis Spalding
Initially, I was thrilled about Avowed, but my excitement quickly turned to disappointment upon starting the game. The initial companions were irritating, the game crashed twice within an hour, it occasionally lagged, and unfortunately, the narrative lacked the excitement that I had hoped for.
Despite continuing to play, I discovered a slight pleasure in it, but I’m still puzzled about why. If the price had been around $40 at most, I might have considered it a rewarding experience… however, considering what I actually spent, that’s not quite the case.
Beautiful Exploration But An Unfulfilled Promise – Sanyam Jain
Upon reaching the primary city in Avowed, I found myself inexplicably drawn away from the main quest and captivated by the intrigue of examining various structures around me. Hours seemed to slip away as I lost myself in the immersive world, discovering hidden gems without even realizing it. The seamless integration and rewarding nature of exploration in this game is truly laudable.
Yet, it offers an element of choice-driven gameplay, suggesting that your decisions hold significant weight. Regrettably, the consequences of many choices are overly simplistic, lacking depth commensurate with the number of options provided.
