Director Fede Álvarez, known for last year’s hit film Alien: Romulus, has disclosed that he is currently developing a sequel and aims to start filming it this year, according to Collider. Additionally, Álvarez expressed his desire to venture into unexplored territories within the franchise, promising a more immersive cinema experience than its forerunner.
As a passionate cinephile, I had the privilege of attending an enlightening panel discussion following an IMAX screening of the awe-inspiring film, “Alien: Romulus”. The esteemed panel included the director of “Don’t Breathe”, Fede Álvarez, along with VFX Supervisor Eric Barbra and Wētā FX VFX Supervisor Dan Macarin. Hosted by Collider, the event was a treasure trove of insights.
During the Q&A session, Álvarez was asked about the anticipated sequel to “Romulus”, and he shared exciting news with us. He revealed that he is currently penning the script for the film, and expressed his hope to commence shooting it this very year!
Alvarez expanded on the progress of the project, emphasizing the necessity of crafting a sequel that effectively advances the plot.
Over the past few months, I’ve been basking in the success of the movie and trying not to dwell on anything else. But with award season upon us, it’s hard not to think about its recognition. And while we’re thrilled with its performance, naturally, discussions about a sequel have started between us and the studio. As a storyteller, I can say that there’s an exciting path and idea in mind for the next chapter of this saga that I am genuinely eager to explore. So, it seems quite likely that we’ll be embarking on this journey again soon.
Álvarez Wants to Take the ‘Alien’ Franchise Into “Uncharted Waters”
Regarding possible directions for a Romulus sequel and its potential impact on the Alien franchise, Álvarez shared his intention to elevate the action into unprecedented realms within the realm of Xenomorphs.
In my opinion, ‘Romulus’ seems to cover all the aspects I long to revisit as a fan, and I believe many of you might share this sentiment. The reason behind creating it was that there were numerous elements from the past I yearned to revive and re-experience. For the sequel, there’s an expansive landscape ahead for us to explore since ‘Alien’ is so multifaceted – it’s ‘Alien’, it’s ‘Prometheus’, and everything in between. Essentially, it’s a massive universe. Now, my desire is to delve into unexplored territories within the franchise.
Any Alien enthusiast will find these words delightful, but they are particularly enticing for those who felt that Romulus leaned a bit too much on familiar franchise elements. Venturing into uncharted territory, creating something entirely fresh and novel, appears to be the ideal course for the show’s progression.
It’s highly unlikely that we’ll encounter Ellen Ripley again, according to Álvarez. He has debunked a recent rumor circulating on a fan site suggesting Sigourney Weaver was in negotiations to reprise her beloved role in the upcoming “Romulus” sequel. Álvarez dismissed the rumor on Twitter, stating, “Just entertaining speculation, but not accurate at all.
The movie “Romulus,” nominated for an Oscar in special effects, stirred debate due to its innovative blend of practical effects and CGI to recreate actor Ian Holm as a new model of his android character from the original “Alien.” Critics found this effect problematic, leading director Álvarez to make adjustments for the movie’s streaming and home release versions.
