It’s surprising that director Sam Raimi, who is largely associated with horror films, has made only a handful of true horror movies in the past three decades. This speaks volumes about the lasting impact and talent demonstrated in his “Evil Dead” series, as well as the underappreciated horror-superhero movie “Darkman.” Now, Raimi is revisiting the horror genre with “Send Help,” which has a confirmed release date of January 30, 2026. The film will be distributed by 20th Century Studios in theaters.
According to a Variety report, Disney, who owns 20th Century Studios, adjusted their upcoming film releases. As a result, “Elio,” the latest Pixar-Disney collaboration, has been delayed by a week. Additionally, Raimi’s “Send Help” and James L. Brooks’ “Ella McCay” have been given theatrical release dates. Here’s hoping that these films will stick to their theatrical releases and not be sent straight to streaming services.
Raimi makes his comeback to the horror genre post Drag Me to Hell in 2009 with the film titled “Send Help”. In this movie, penned by Mark Swift and Damian Shannon, we see Rachel McAdams, Dylan O’Brien, Dennis Haysbert, and Chris Pang as the main characters. The plot revolves around a woman and her supervisor who find themselves in trouble when they become stranded on an island, leaving them to devise a means of survival.
Sam Raimi’s Long-Awaited Return to Horror
16 years ago, Sam Raimi’s horror film, “Drag Me to Hell,” was released, marking his final venture into the genre up until now. Alternatively, one could interpret this as a brief break from scary movies that Raimi took during this period. From the mid-’90s to the year 2000, Raimi dabbled in three distinct movie genres. He directed a Western (“The Quick and the Dead”), a thriller (“A Simple Plan”), and a sports drama (“For Love of the Game”). Regrettably, these films didn’t fare well commercially, but “A Simple Plan” is often praised as a masterpiece of ’90s cinema.
In the year 2000, Sam Raimi slightly ventured into the genre with “The Gift”, a supernatural mystery film that is quite distinct from his usual horror movies. Featuring Cate Blanchett, Keanu Reeves, and Hilary Swank, “The Gift” was an impressive thriller that felt like Raimi returning to his preferred filmmaking style. It achieved moderate success at the box office, prompting Raimi to continue breaking free from being stereotyped as a horror director. Subsequently, he embarked on an entirely new movie project. Or perhaps, a new franchise.
Between the years 2002 and 2007, Sam Raimi found himself immersed within the realm of superhero cinema. The release of ‘Spider-Man’ revitalized the genre, debunking the misconception that the 1990s signaled the demise of superheroes, with ‘Batman & Robin’ being a significant blow to its reputation. Bryan Singer’s ‘X-Men’ and ‘Spider-Man’ complemented each other well, leading to successful sequels for Raimi. This genre proved to be financially lucrative for him, as evidenced by his highest-grossing film, 2022’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’, which earned over $955 million.
Prior to directing the Spider-Man movies, Sam Raimi initially worked on a script for an original horror film not based on any intellectual property. It wasn’t until he stepped away from superheroes that he returned to this project. Known as “Drag Me to Hell,” this supernatural horror film allowed him to revisit his roots in campy horror, and it earned him one of his highest Rotten Tomatoes ratings. With a 92% score, Drag Me to Hell barely misses Spider-Man 2, often considered the greatest superhero movie ever made.
As a fan, I find myself pondering over it: Despite being renowned for his work in the horror genre, Raimi hasn’t directed many horror films compared to what one might expect from someone so closely associated with it. His Evil Dead series is legendary, but interestingly, he has actually created more non-horror movies, which seems incredible. Yet, the prospect of his return to this genre fills me with anticipation. Raimi’s ability to create distinct horror films is simply unmatched, and I can only hope that Send Help maintains this exceptional standard.
