Kristin Davis on Why ‘Sex and the City’ Cast Was ‘Scared’ to Show Their Nipples on the Show

Kristin Davis explains the reason behind the cast’s apprehension about revealing nudity, particularly nipples, in the popular show “Sex and the City”.

The actress who portrays Charlotte York on the show has discussed how societal views of women have evolved since the series first aired from 1998 to 2004, on her podcast titled “Are You a Charlotte?“. After the initial run of the program, Davis has also reappeared in two films and the current version of the series called “And Just Like That“.

Davis noted in her discussion with Dr. Hillary Goldsher that it’s become quite common to see almost everyone on a red carpet wearing nearly transparent dresses, which could reveal nipples. She added that such a thing wouldn’t have been acceptable in earlier times.

She added, “We felt apprehensive about exposing our nipples on the program. We exclaimed, ‘Oh my goodness! They want us to reveal our nipples!’ We were extremely concerned about it. Aren’t we? Like, would we be ostracized? Would we be banished… by the film industry or such, which is quite absurd to consider.

Davis mentioned that she felt a significant amount of stress about how to portray herself in the public eye during the early stages of her career, often seeking guidance from her costars on “Sex and the City,” such as Sarah Jessica Parker (Bradshaw), Cynthia Nixon (Miranda Hobbes), and Kim Cattrall (Samantha Jones).

As a devoted fan looking back, I recall the palpable excitement and apprehension that engulfed me ahead of the 2004 Emmy Awards. It was the night I had been nominated for best supporting actress in a comedy series, an honor that left me both elated and anxious. Instead of venturing out to choose my own outfit, I found myself seeking the advice of designers. However, the array of opinions from my team members proved challenging, leading me to ultimately collaborate with a stylist to ensure a harmonious ensemble for the big night.

Davis shared a story about a revealing dress she felt uncomfortable wearing. It wasn’t really her style, but the designer insisted, and her manager suggested it would help change people’s perceptions of her since she plays a prudish character on the show. However, she was surprised by this suggestion considering she was still part of Sex and the City.

She mentioned that her boss recommended she should wear the “dress revealing much skin,” whereas her agent advised her, “I’m afraid not, dear. You ought to wear this gown with a royal touch, you understand, for elegance.

Davis admitted that she found it extremely challenging to figure out the best way to express herself and understand her intentions, as well as her place in the discussion. This situation caused her a great deal of stress. To ease this tension, she opted for a compromise in terms of her attire.

The actress added that it’s “so interesting” to see how perception has changed over the years.
