A few small hints about Nancy Travis’ significant role in the Valentine’s Day episode of “Shifting Gears” are included in this article, as the series has now been added to the 2025 television lineup.
Nancy Travis’ recent reunion with Tim Allen on “Shifting Gears,” her fellow actor from “Last Man Standing,” proved enjoyable not just for viewers but also for those behind the scenes. Interestingly, many crew members from Allen’s current show were also part of his previous sitcom, and some even go back to his “Home Improvement” days. Travis shared the moment during filming that elicited the loudest cheer when she was on set.
On the TV series “Shifting Gears,” Travis appeared as Charlotte, a widow who crossed paths with Matt at the cemetery. After a five-year period of mourning, they encountered each other, and Charlotte played a role in helping Matt understand that life goes on even after losing a partner. Although it may not have been a cheerful situation, the show incorporated hints towards their past from “Last Man Standing,” such as when Matt expressed reluctance about meeting someone new and Charlotte playfully pointed out that he resembled “the last man she was with” too much.
The joke resonated strongly with many members of the original “Last Man Standing” team, as well as others working on the set.
The skit generated the largest burst of laughter. There’s a sense that everyone is part of something special. It has an incredibly welcoming atmosphere. Those who frequently attend the tapings likely admire both Tim and Kat Dennings. However, they anticipate specific elements, and when they notice an actor with whom Tim has previously collaborated on the show, they eagerly wait for the shared nod or secret joke.
Travis shared that the “inside joke” was something she picked up while working on “Last Man Standing.” During her tenure on this long-running sitcom, the show featured Patricia Richardson, who was previously married to Tim Allen on “Home Improvement,” and they adopted a similar approach.
I remember there were a lot of jokes like that when Pat Richardson was on ‘Last Man Standing.’
As I found myself stepping onto the familiar set of a sitcom once more, I couldn’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and apprehension. Working alongside an old scene partner always brings back memories, yet the dynamics can shift when roles and characters evolve. Unlike my previous character Vanessa Baxter from Nancy Travis’ Last Man Standing, Charlotte is more seasoned and witty. However, I suspect that the rhythm of collaboration with a long-time co-star remains much the same, stirring up intriguing emotions during filming. This was especially true as I returned to the sitcom set, surrounded by many familiar faces from my past. Thankfully, this reunion turned out to be a positive and enjoyable experience overall.
Shifting Gears has just begun its first season and it’s Tim Allen’s comeback to network television. So far, it’s been a hit with viewers in ratings. If you haven’t watched it yet, you can catch up with a Hulu subscription. Given the upcoming guest appearances, I’d suggest starting soon if you’re eager for cameos – another one featuring car enthusiast Jay Leno is forthcoming.
