As a die-hard movie buff eagerly counting down the days, I can’t contain my excitement as Season 37 of “The Amazing Race” is set to grace our screens in March 2025! The show has teased a rollercoaster ride filled with unexpected turns, and one such twist is the brand-new “Fork in the Road”. But that’s not all – this season will boast an unprecedented cast size, a fact that none of the contestants were privy to before stepping onto the mat for the first time.
In a recent chat during SCAD TV fest, our very own Laura Hurley interviewed budding contestants Han and Holden Nyugen from TopMob. They were taken aback when they found out that the next season of The Amazing Race was being filmed. They described the news as a “massive” surprise, and it’s hard to put into words just how astounded they must have felt.
It completely took me by surprise. Let me tell you, I believe this is one of the most exceptional casts on The Amazing Race. Each participant seems incredibly distinct and impressive. However, when we initially encountered the map for the first time and saw that there were 14 teams, it was quite a jaw-dropping moment.
For this season, Phil Keoghan and his team are aiming for a major overhaul, yet one essential characteristic of the program remains unaltered.
Fundamentally, the main objective of Race throughout its course, especially leading up to the finale, is simply avoiding being at the bottom. This might sound straightforward, but it’s not as simple as it seems, given that there are 14 teams involved initially. However, this larger number could potentially assist those falling behind early on. Yet, it’s important to note that this race isn’t solely about talent and strategy; it encompasses various external factors such as travel, luck, the TAR rules, selecting appropriate tasks, and whether roadblocks and other challenges align with a team’s capabilities. In essence, success in this reality competition show depends not only on skill but also on a good dose of fortune and smart decision-making.
In the last two seasons of The Amazing Race, just 13 teams were participating, while in all seasons prior, there were only 10-12 teams. This means that to secure a spot in the final three, you need to eliminate 1-3 additional teams compared to typical seasons. To claim the $1 million prize package, you must also be the first team to reach the mat when it truly matters.
Instead, Han and Holden Nyugen explained that their primary objective was simply to “persevere” and avoid creating any adversaries during the process.
Holden: In other words, if it implied something along the lines of, “Come on, buddy, could you lend a hand? We’ll return the favor,” that was how we operated.
Han: But I think more generally speaking, be nice to everybody. Make no enemies.
Assisting others during crucial stages can be a major annoyance for many fans of The Amazing Race. Nevertheless, promoting camaraderie over hostility or indifference towards fellow competitors is more advantageous in the long run. Whether this tactic will propel Han and Holden into the final three remains to be seen, but I’m eagerly anticipating how these modifications unfold in the upcoming extended episodes of TAR.
