Actress Kate Winslet will be making her first attempt at directing a full-length movie with the Netflix production titled “Goodbye June“, which falls under the genre of family dramas.
The Academy Award winner is set to both produce and act in an upcoming film. This movie will feature Toni Collette, Johnny Flynn, Andrea Riseborough, Timothy Spall, and Helen Mirren as its stars. Joe Anders, the son of Winslet and her ex-husband Sam Mendes, penned the screenplay for this project. Additionally, Kate Solomon is also on board to produce the film alongside Winslet.
Solomon was responsible for the latest film starring Winslet, titled “Lee“, a biography focusing on Lee Miller, who transitioned from being a model to a World War II photographer during her career. The movie featured Riseborough as one of its actors.
In the movie, Winslet received a nomination for a Golden Globe award due to her exceptional acting, while Lee’s work was recognized with a BAFTA nomination for the best British film of the year.
Netflix characterizes the series, “Goodbye June,” as a “heartfelt and amusing” drama that follows a broken family of siblings who unexpectedly unite in difficult situations.
The England-set present-day drama will begun production soon in the U.K.
Discussing Lee on the “How to Fail” podcast with Elizabeth Day last autumn, Winslet shared her reasons for initially resisting directorial opportunities, largely because of the heavy time involvement. However, she now feels a strong sense of “pressure” and obligation towards women in the Hollywood industry to take up directing roles.
She often encounters individuals on film sets, both colleagues and acquaintances, expressing, “Why don’t you direct?” This can range from actors to crew members. Her response is usually, “Please stop saying that,” or “No, no, no.” However, she finds herself increasingly questioning this sentiment as the need for cultural change arises. She now feels strongly that by not directing, she might be unintentionally holding back other women in the industry. This feeling has become quite pronounced for her.
She commented about female directors, “The more of us who are active in this field, the greater the inspiration for others to follow suit.
She expressed confidence that she could direct a movie, as she’s grasped the technical aspects of film production now.
I won’t attempt anything unless I feel confident I can execute it skillfully,” I assert.
Besides Lee, Winslet was also recently featured in the HBO miniseries The Regime. This series brought her a Golden Globe nomination, making her an exceptional case as she was nominated for multiple roles during the same ceremony. She was awarded the Best Actress Oscar in 2009, recognizing her outstanding performance in The Reader.
Winslet is repped by CAA and United Agents.
ScreenDaily first reported on Winslet lining up her directorial debut.
