Tom Cruise and McQuarrie Reveal Plans to Fix ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning’ Fiasco

Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie have dedicated themselves to creating unparalleled excitement in movies through the Mission: Impossible series. However, 2023’s untitled film,
fell short of expectations in numerous aspects even though it brought a respectable box office return for most franchises. As they gear up to release Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning this summer, the director has acknowledged the less-than-enthusiastic reception towards its predecessor, which led to significant changes in the upcoming film.

Following a protracted production marred by numerous challenges, such as the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic that significantly increased its budget to approximately $300 million, the release of “Dead Reckoning” was not financially lucrative due to stiff competition with other blockbuster movies. Despite this, it managed to avoid being a complete failure, but fell short of initial expectations. As shared by McQuarrie in an interview with Empire magazine, the underperformance of “Dead Reckoning” influenced his and Cruise’s strategy for the sequel’s production.

The movie wasn’t well-received by everyone. Certain aspects of the film failed to resonate with some viewers. I empathize, I understand, and I appreciate their perspective. I don’t judge those who didn’t ‘get it.’ That’s an easy excuse. Tom and I always evaluate a movie in the same way, regardless of its box office success or failure. If the film grossed $600 million or just six dollars, we would still say it could have been improved. For those who enjoyed the movie, we stayed true to our promise. For those who didn’t, we don’t give up. We continue to strive for better.

‘Mission: Impossible’ Is Looking to Come Back Strong This Year

The success of the “Mission: Impossible” series, with the $1 billion earnings of “Fallout,” appeared to ensure a steady stream of income. However, the unpredictable trends among moviegoers make accurate forecasting impossible. Similar to other high-profile films in recent years, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” unexpectedly faced challenges in attracting audiences.

McQuarrie, while working on chapter eight, understands the significant weight behind this year’s movie release, especially given Tom Cruise’s determination to perform daring stunts that challenge gravity. If successful, the film could erase the shortcomings of its predecessor and be a triumphant comeback. It’s often the case that box office flops are painful, but a subsequent big success can swiftly cause people to overlook past mistakes.

It remains unclear if this will be Tom Cruise’s final movie in the Mission: Impossible series, as originally planned, Dead Reckoning and its sequel were marketed as the end of the franchise, but things have changed over time. The Final Reckoning title does sound conclusive, however, history shows that films labeled “The Final Chapter” often turn out to be far from it. Essentially, if The Final Reckoning becomes a massive box office success, there’s a chance Ethan Hunt may return for more missions.
