For three years now, I’ve been captivated by the arrival of Moon Knight on Disney+ – a hero who perfectly filled a void in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at that specific time. First appearing in 1975 through the creative minds of Doug Monech and Don Perlin, Moon Knight initially served as an adversary to Werewolf By Night before his growing popularity warranted a solo series in 1980. Over the years, he’s risen to become a beloved character within Marvel Comics and is renowned for his battle with dissociative-identity disorder (DID), transforming the Moon Knight persona into much more than just a crime-fighting costume.
In the series “Moon Knight,” actor Oscar Isaac portrays Steven Grant, a quiet museum employee who uncovers his hidden identity as Marc Spector, a transformed U.S. Marine-turned-mercenary. This character was revived by the Egyptian moon god Khonshu after brushing with death. The deity proposed that Spector would serve as their human representative, enacting vengeance on those deemed appropriate. In the show, Spector and Grant find themselves at odds with Arthur Harrow, a follower of the entity known as the “Devourer of Death,” Ammit. They join forces with Layla El-Faouly, Spector’s former spouse and an archaeologist, to locate Ammit’s tomb and prevent her resurrection.
In the series finale of “Moon Knight,” Steven and Marc manage to prevent Harrow from reviving Ammit, thus breaking free from Khonshu’s influence. However, during the end credits, fans were left in suspense as it was disclosed that Khonshu maintains a close relationship with an undisclosed third personality: Jake Lockley, who fatally strikes Harrow in the last moments of season 1. The one thing still uncertain is whether Lockley possesses his own Moon Knight identity.
Who is Jake Lockley?
For fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe who are casual or new to the storyline, the appearance of Jake Lockley at the end of season one might come as a surprise. However, long-time comic book readers were anticipating the introduction of all Moon Knight’s alter egos, including both Steven Grant and Jake Lockley. In the comics, Steven Grant provided financial support for Moon Knight, while Jake Lockley served as an ordinary cab driver who collected information during their shared adventures.
Lockley, who isn’t typically a significant character in Moon Knight tales because Marc Spector seldom embodies him fully (except for when he escaped to Mexico following the Thunderbolts’ pursuit), is hinted to take on a more crucial role in the series, operating independently of both Marc and Steven. The show suggests that Lockley possesses a higher capacity for violence than Grant or Spector, which could explain why Khonshu holds him in such high regard.
When I discussed Jake Lockley’s arrival with Marvel, I saw a chance to infuse a piece of me into the role that wasn’t merely mimicking the comic book version. There’s an eerie quality about him, the level of control he wields in contrast to both Marc and Steven, who have been so unstable. This perspective also influenced the decision to portray Lockley as a Spanish speaker.
Moon Knight’s costume designer teased the design of Jake Lockley’s suit
In creating the live-action version of Moon Knight, great care was taken to portray his multiple identities authentically, including Steven Grant’s persona as Mr. Knight. The Moon Knight costume draws inspiration from Egyptian mummies and features white colors reminiscent of the character’s comic book design. Meanwhile, the three-piece suit worn by Mr. Knight was designed with comfort in mind for filming action sequences.
Initially, costume designer Meghan Kasperlik (who has worked on shows like “Mare of Easttown” and “Watchmen”) revealed to The Direct that for the initial season, there were no intentions to reveal Jake Lockley’s Moon Knight persona costume. Nevertheless, she shared her ideas about what a potential costume for this character might look like, stating, “I believe I would make it more somber. I would likely… the black costume as seen in the comics. I would definitely start with that design.
Regarding the “black costume” Kasperlik mentioned, it could be referring to two possibilities. One is the distinctive black-and-white appearance from the 2014 “Moon Knight” series illustrated by Declan Shalvey. The other option might be Shadowknight, a Moon Knight comic antagonist known for his darker, undead-like appearance. Another possibility for Jake Lockley’s alter ego is Midnight Man, a lesser-known villain who appeared in Moon Knight’s early stories.
When will Oscar Isaac return as Moon Knight?
In essence, all these debates about how Jake Lockley’s Moon Knight form might appear are irrelevant if the character doesn’t resurface in the future. In recent times, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has faced a series of challenges, such as underperforming Disney+ shows, “superhero fatigue,” and alterations to the “Multiverse Saga” due to a well-known supervillain’s legal issues. These events have cast doubt on Oscar Isaac’s character’s future in the MCU, despite earlier assurances from Feige that he would reappear.
Following the initial airing of the series, Isaac voiced a desire to reprise his role, stating to ComicBook.com, “Basically, it boils down to the tale. Is there an engaging story? Will I be proud or embarrassed by it upon its release?” Yet, during the promotional run for the first season, he also mentioned that one of the reasons he was drawn to “Moon Knight” was the absence of obligations to future projects.
According to the show’s director, Mohamed Diab, there are currently no definite plans for a second season or a movie featuring the character, as of October 2024. Similarly, Kevin Feige confirmed in 2024 that there were no plans to create a sequel for other Phase 4 projects such as “The Eternals”. Therefore, it appears that Moon Knight fans may only get to see their favorite character in the “Avengers: Secret Wars” film, which is scheduled for release in 2027.
Let’s theorize about an MCU future for Moon Knight
Fans are eagerly awaiting news on whether a second season of “Moon Knight” will take place, as they are keen to discover the future of Marc Spector and his various personas. In an interview with ComicBook.com, director Mohamed Diab expressed his own hopes, stating that he would like to delve deeper into the character of Jake Lockley. He finds it intriguing to explore his world, uncover what transpires during those mysterious moments when he blinks, and learn more about who he is and whom he loves.
There are whispers suggesting that Oscar Isaac’s character might be involved in two potential Marvel Cinematic Universe productions: either an “Avengers” film, which could be titled “Avengers: Doomsday” or “Avengers: Secret Wars”, and “Midnight Sons”. It’s important to note that as of early 2025, Marvel has not yet verified the rumor about a “Midnight Sons” project. However, with the appearance of characters such as Werewolf By Night, Elsa Bloodstone, and Blade, it seems the studio is definitely positioning its cast for this scenario.
Oscar Isaac has shown enthusiasm about being part of the Midnight Sons, mentioning at the 2024 Middle East Film & Comic Con (via X), “Now that we’ve established who Marc, Steven, and Jake are…it could be intriguing to explore him as a team member and witness the nature of such a group dynamic.” As for Moon Knight in the MCU, we can only hope his character, Jake Lockley, will get a chance to display some formidable fighting skills.
