Ethan Hunt’s last mission to save the world might kick off in France, as “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” is planning a significant premiere at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival. Following a lackluster performance of its previous installment titled “Dead Reckoning,” the production company aims to build excitement for the upcoming sequel by potentially releasing it in theaters earlier than its scheduled late May premiere, amidst an action-packed summer movie season.
As reported by Variety, Paramount might unveil the eighth (potentially last) Mission: Impossible movie at the Cannes Film Festival. Should they choose this route, the festival in late May could mark the global release date of the film. If this upcoming sequel indeed concludes the series for everyone involved, especially Tom Cruise, it’s fitting that The Final Reckoning would create a grand impact at such an esteemed event. Additionally, it is not uncommon for Cruise and his team to premiere their films at Cannes.
In the recent Cannes Film Festival of 2022, the highly popular sequel, “Top Gun: Maverick,” was screened. Known for its lengthy five-minute standing ovation at its Cannes debut, this film was later nominated for six Oscars in the 2023 Academy Awards. With a staggering gross of almost $1.5 billion at the global box office, it surpassed the earnings of any “Mission: Impossible” movie to date. Despite the underperformance of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning” at the box office, anticipation for its next installment may be heightened by early festival excitement and the possibility of some award recognition.
‘Mission: Impossible 8’ Features Several Death-Defying Stunts
In typical Tom Cruise style, Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning sees Ethan Hunt executing jaw-dropping actions yet again, this time to prevent a catastrophic global event caused by The Entity. A sneak peek from the set showcases Cruise donning waterproof equipment, ready to tackle another lengthy underwater scene. This sequence involves him delving into a submarine that appeared in the last movie, forcing him to traverse treacherous waters littered with debris and other potential hazards. As always, the filmmakers strove to make the scene as authentic as possible, ensuring it was an incredibly difficult and terrifying stunt for Cruise to carry out.
I marvel at the intricate design of this rotating structure laden with debris, a challenge to create an atmosphere of complete disorder and instability, yet one that could be replicated consistently for Tom to maneuver through safely. With his unparalleled abilities, I had faith that only Tom Cruise would rise to this challenge. And indeed, he has done it masterfully – mission accomplished.
From the glimpses we’ve caught in the trailers and the latest Super Bowl spot, it’s clear that Mission: Impossible – Fallout will see me dangling from a plane high above the ground once more. It appears that this could be the grand finale for Ethan Hunt, as the movie is being billed as such. Yet, rest assured, I won’t be retiring from big-screen action any time soon; there are still exciting projects in the pipeline, like the potential Top Gun: Maverick sequel. In the interim, I’m currently busy filming an unnamed project in the UK, under the direction of Alejandro G. Iñárritu. The team behind this film promises to be nothing short of stellar!
