AI Development: Split Fiction Director Says Devs Should Work ‘With and Not Against’ AI

Following the success of their hit game “It Takes Two”, Hazelight Studios is now developing a new cooperative platformer titled “Split Fiction“.

In the heated discussions surrounding AI in the realm of entertainment, director Josef Fares offers insights into how the gaming industry might approach AI and guide its role in future game design.

It Takes Two Director on AI in Game Development

During a conversation with Video Games Chronicle, Fares stated, “We need to adjust and incorporate it… If it’s a part of our gaming industry, let’s explore ways to utilize it to produce better games. I recognize the potential difficulty some people may face in terms of job loss, but this is true for any emerging technology.

Due to the advent of AI, artists have become some of its loudest critics. They argue that their creations have often been employed to teach AI how to replicate their unique styles and produce pictures falsely claimed as genuine artwork.

AI technology has significantly advanced the field of Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI), enabling remarkable feats such as bringing deceased actors back to life on screen using machine learning techniques, like the depiction of young Luke Skywalker in “The Mandalorian”. Similarly, it’s been employed to mimic voices, such as that of James Earl Jones for Darth Vader in the series “Obi-Wan Kenobi”.

Regarding the gaming aspect, there’s concern that AI might be employed to create games or potentially replace human artists, an event some consider distant, especially given the challenge of creating an AI-generated game that is thoroughly enjoyable for players.

Certain games, however, have faced critique due to allegations of imitation from more renowned games, and it’s been suggested that artificial intelligence could potentially be behind the development of their character designs in these particular titles.

“Bad Stuff and Good Stuff will Come Out of It”

As a supporter, I can attest that Fares hasn’t outright dismissed the role of AI, unlike some other figures in the entertainment industry. Instead, he acknowledges both its potential pitfalls and benefits. In his words, “Bad things and good things will emerge from it. It’s not about burying our heads in the sand. I firmly believe that AI will have a more profound impact on the world than the internet did, given time. While we might not be ready to incorporate it into our creative processes yet, perhaps others are.

While certain advancements have laid the groundwork for applying AI in entertainment, it’s worth noting that its application in gaming can present unique challenges, particularly when it comes to titles that center around AI mimicking human behavior. A notable example is “The Last of Us Part II,” which featured an advanced AI system capable of adapting dynamically and adjusting enemy behaviors based on a player’s actions.

While some argue that we’re yet to fully understand how artificial intelligence will impact various industries, it appears that artists have been one of the groups most immediately affected following its ascent.

Split Fiction will be released on March 6 for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.
