The 2020 movie starring Deadpool and Wolverine, titled “Deadpool & Wolverine“, was among the top-earning films last year. This action-packed Marvel production appealed to both spectators and reviewers, reestablishing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s dominance at the box office after a string of relatively unsuccessful Marvel releases. The film seemed like a true passion project for Ryan Reynolds, and it appears that his affection for the role continues, as evidenced by Reynolds’ recent social media post showcasing a present he received from a member of the film’s staff.
Reynolds posted to Instagram an image along with a note he received from storyboard artist Jeremy Simser. It seems Simser handled storyboarding the big “one shot’ fight sequence with Deadpool and Wolverine taking on the dozens of Deadpools. Simser created a single-image version of the sequence and has given one to Reynolds, who shared the image, alongside audio of Dolly Parton’s classic “I Will Always Love You.”
To capture the entire poster for your Instagram post, it needs to be taken from a distance. Upon closer inspection, though, this scene is truly amazing! It showcases the chaotic intensity of the sequence, featuring Deadpool and Wolverine battling an endless army of Deadpools (excluding Kidpool).
The song accompanying the post is equally fantastic, reflecting Reynolds’ personal affection for the present he received and serving as a suitable homage to Deadpool. Wade Wilson adores Dolly nearly as much as he cherishes Bea Arthur – after all, who doesn’t admire Dolly Parton? Notably, Deadpool 2 utilized “9 to 5” in its initial action sequence, and the music selection in all Deadpool films is exceptional when it comes to well-timed song placements.
It’s evident that Simser took great pleasure in his role in the joint venture of Deadpool and Wolverine, as this enthusiasm seemed to be consistent throughout the production team. Interestingly, Hugh Jackman, who had previously announced his departure from the Wolverine character, returned for the movie, an idea he himself proposed. From all indications, it appears that Jackman is satisfied with his decision. Furthermore, reports suggest that Jackman, Simser, and director Shawn Levy found the filmmaking process incredibly enjoyable, so much so that they are considering collaborating on a future project outside of the Marvel universe.
It appears that the enjoyment didn’t stop just for those in front of the camera. One can speculate that, as a comic book enthusiast, designing storyboards for a comic book movie must feel like bringing comic strips to life. To then witness that work unfold on screen must be equally thrilling. The fight scene, skillfully crafted with some CGI help and seemingly executed in one continuous shot, is a captivating display of violence choreographed to the rhythm of Madonna’s “Like a Prayer.” Unfortunately, I can’t share the entire scene here as it can only be viewed with a Disney+ subscription at the moment.
