If you can’t wait for Obsidian Entertainment’s upcoming title, Avowed, perhaps you’re searching for a similar RPG to play in the meantime?
7. The Outer Words
In the same vein as another role-playing game from Obsidian Entertainment, it’s no surprise that The Outer Worlds has been included. Essentially, it can be considered the space-themed counterpart to Avowed. It shares the same color scheme, companion dynamics, faction politics, and map structure (a series of open-world hubs instead of one expansive map for exploration).
If you’re equally fond of science fiction and fantasy, “The Outer Worlds” does an exceptional job in satisfying your craving for adventure while infusing a hint of cowboy-style frontier ambiance into space exploration. As ‘The Stranger’, a colonist whose spaceship arrived 50 years too late at its destination, you find yourself amidst a frozen cargo of future settlers and corporate interests that hinder your noble mission. This game presents thought-provoking and occasionally humorous commentary on capitalism.
6. Dragon’s Dogma 2
In simpler terms, Dragon’s Dogma 2 is an engaging role-playing game that initially took some time to grow on me, but eventually won me over. It features a conventional medieval fantasy backdrop with elements from various mythologies. Unlike many other games, Dragon’s Dogma 2 doesn’t provide extensive explanations about its mechanics, and there’s no fast travel. Encounters with enemies in the wilderness can be tough. However, once you get past the learning curve, you’ll discover a rich world filled with memorable bosses and amusing companions. Unfortunately, the main storyline isn’t particularly memorable, but that’s not the primary focus of the game. The aspect I enjoyed most was the Pawn system and the witty conversations among my party members as we journeyed (which is good because there’s a lot of traveling in this game).
Frequently, you’ll hire free-roaming allies (accomplices) in this game or from other players. They’ll make observations, fight your adversaries, and often find themselves in tricky situations. You can either rehire them when their conditions are met or let them return to the wilderness. I discovered that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is more entertaining once you create your own narratives within its world.
5. Dragon Age: The Veilguard
In the game “Dragon Age: Veilguard,” the narrative takes center stage above all else. Initial impacts of player choices may appear minimal, but they can quickly escalate with surprising intensity within a matter of hours. If character development is a key appeal in RPGs for you, then the Dragon Age series is definitely worth exploring. While it’s not necessary to play the earlier installments before Veilguard, doing so will enrich your understanding of the lore and environments.
Moreover, if you were disappointed by the absence of romance in “Avowed,” prepare to be smitten by your screen with Dragon Age: Veilguard. However, be warned that this game requires persistence when it comes to flirting. Truly, it’s a labor of love!
4. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Speaking about Avowed, I can’t help but make noticeable parallels with Skyrim. Both games offer the freedom to switch between magic and melee, and they are set on an isolated land striving for self-governance amidst the complex politics of a larger universe.
Should it happen, if by some stroke of luck, you’ve made it to adulthood without experiencing Skyrim, then allow me to offer my heartfelt congratulations for your courage in living independently from the crowd. Nevertheless, I encourage you to give it a try. You see, although it may seem trendy to shun something widely popular (indeed, Game of Thrones became rather overrated by its end), there are times when things become popular because they genuinely deserve it.
In Skyrim, you embark on an epic fantasy journey, assuming the role of the Dragonborn, an individual possessing the unique ability to communicate with dragons (useful given that an ancient one is causing trouble for the realm). You’ll encounter classic fantasy elements, develop skills, explore diverse settings, and get lost in countless side quests for up to a hundred hours. The faction narratives are captivating and leave lasting impressions. Despite your initial resistance, you’ll find yourself drawn into the fanbase that eventually captivates everyone.
3. Fallout: New Vegas
Despite not being a fantasy game, “Fallout: New Vegas” is an RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment, which is widely recognized as one of the greatest role-playing games ever made. This game is set in post-nuclear war America and boasts one of the most chilling openings in gaming history. In this story, you play as ‘The Courier’. Your package has been stolen and a suave man in a checkered suit shoots you in the head shortly after.
In the aftermath, I find myself free to roam the expanses of the Mojave Wasteland, equipped only with my trusty Pip-Boy and a burning desire for answers. My journey will take me deep into the conflict zones of rival factions vying for dominance. The ultimate decision on who will emerge victorious lies in my hands, and there’s no one clear ‘good’ path to choose. Much like other Fallout games, I can shape my character to be as virtuous or wicked as I wish, tracking my deeds through a Karma system. Despite the grim backdrop of a post-apocalyptic world, Fallout: New Vegas is infused with a witty humor that’s become emblematic of Obsidian productions.
2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
The Witcher series stands out as a top choice in the role-playing game (RPG) category, and rightfully so. Each of the three installments are worth investing your time into, but The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is widely considered one of the best RPGs I’ve ever encountered. However, be prepared to dedicate approximately two months if you plan on completing it from beginning to end – and that’s only for the side game, Gwent.
As I step into the boots of the White Wolf, Geralt of Rivia, my quest is to find my missing ward Ciri, a journey that takes me across the vast continent. Along the way, I encounter both allies and adversaries while picking up contracts to complete. Being a Witcher, it’s my duty to vanquish monsters and safeguard the afflicted villagers – all for a fee. Or, like myself, one can often choose to stand with the monsters instead.
In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, I am seen as an outsider due to my profession, yet every person I meet relies on me for help. The richness of its lore and world-building may initially seem overwhelming, but once you’re captivated, it becomes a lifelong obsession.
1. Baldur’s Gate 3
Despite the widespread fatigue about Baldur’s Gate 3, it appears we just can’t help but discuss this game, regardless of our efforts to stay quiet. Set within the Forgotten Realms universe of Dungeons and Dragons, the game begins with you and your travel companions undergoing bizarre tadpole experiments before a sudden crash-landing on a beach. The story that unfolds is filled with numerous quests, exploration, and opportunities to gather loot in a world brimming with captivating lore and atmosphere. If you enjoy playing the villain in RPGs, you’ll find much to appreciate here, as the game allows you to come close to causing global destruction or embodying pure goodness. Additionally, once your actions gain enough approval from your companions, you can engage in romantic pursuits with them.
In a natural and easy-to-read manner: Baldur’s Gate 3 delivers the high-stakes action common in modern role-playing games, but it also offers some absurdly entertaining moments. However, its success can be a drawback: After playing it, Baldur’s Gate 3 sets such a high standard for RPGs that other games may struggle to meet it. Consequently, this game might demand your undivided attention once you have completed Avowed.
