Ever since the release of Marvel Rivals, discussions surrounding the NetEase game have arisen, ultimately contributing to the decline and demise of Blizzard’s original hero shooter, Overwatch.
It’s been revealed that even the developers of Overwatch have stepped up their efforts, as they admit to working more diligently since the release of a Marvel-inspired version of their game in December.
“This is No Longer about Playing It Safe”
In a recent conversation with GamesRadar (through VGC), Overwatch 2 director Aaron Keller revealed, “We find ourselves in an unfamiliar competitive environment, one that we haven’t experienced to such an extent before, as there’s another game that bears striking resemblance to the one we’ve developed. This situation, we believe, compels our team to step out of their comfort zone – it’s no longer about playing it safe.
Despite some fans criticizing Blizzard for failing to meet all the promises of Overwatch 2, it’s been revealed that the challenge posed by Marvel Rivals has caused the development team to delay some long-planned projects in order to focus on competition. Keller further explains this situation.
Many of the features we’re revealing for seasons 15 and 16, such as perks and Stadium, are elements that have been in the works for Overwatch for a while. I believe this is because when we examine our game, we feel that something is lacking or it hasn’t progressed as much as it ought to.
Unfulfilled Promises
While many Marvel Rivals players find it promising, Overwatch 2 has fallen short of expectations for numerous fans, particularly given the promises of abundant content that ultimately got either shelved or cancelled by the developers.
As a devoted fan myself, I fully grasp the emotions you all are experiencing regarding Overwatch 2. Nonetheless, I want you to witness the unwavering dedication our team pours into this project. I acknowledge your disappointment if the game didn’t meet your initial expectations. I hear your criticism, but from our perspective, the only course of action now is to create the best possible version of Overwatch 2 that we can.
The Current Landscape
Over the last few weeks, it feels like the hype surrounding “Overwatch 2” and “Marvel Rivals” has been constantly shifting back and forth for me as a fan. Every time a new character or cosmetic comes out in “Marvel Rivals”, I can’t help but get drawn in, and then weeks later, the excitement builds up again when “Overwatch 2” unveils some major reveals that attract numerous Twitch streamers.
It’s still uncertain which game franchise will ultimately triumph, but it’s clear that Overwatch 2 isn’t backing down easily. While Marvel Rivals benefits from a well-known IP, Overwatch has been in the hero shooter game for quite some time now, and its developers have accumulated a wealth of experience about what strategies work and which ones don’t. To be fair, Marvel Rivals can learn from Overwatch 2’s missteps as well.
