Characters who offer support can significantly enhance a balanced party within a game, and that’s precisely the role Giatta aims to play in Obsidian’s latest RPG, set within the world of Pillars of Eternity. However, not every support character is equally effective, leading us to wonder: does Giatta possess the qualities needed to rank among the top-tier options?

In an interview, Game Rant talked to James Agay, the lead area designer for the game “Avowed”. He clarified the role of the character Giatta within the game’s combats and her impact on the Envoy’s surroundings, acting on their behalf.

Supporting Avowed’s Party

To put it simply, Giatta is a scientist specialized in animancy – the exploration of souls. This knowledge is particularly useful for healing and supporting roles. Unlike some might expect, her work involves more numbers (math) than mysticism. While this isn’t entirely unique among fantasy healers, it allows her to manipulate objects using magic if the player’s Envoy doesn’t choose that path, as Agay clarified.

Giatta serves as an animator in the game, and her main role on the battlefield is supportive. She possesses abilities to heal team members, fortify them with mystical shields, enhance their speed, and even perform passive healing alongside her attack damage. This gives her a significant edge in combat, although it means she deals less overall damage compared to other party members. Furthermore, Giatta can cast a Spectral Jolt to activate Essence Generators scattered throughout the world, which can be beneficial if the player hasn’t focused on developing their own magical skills.

It’s not unusual for enthusiasts of roleplaying games to realize that healing plays a crucial role in a group’s victory. Some games aim to equip every character with some form of healing, eliminating the need for a specific healer character, but the role of a support character – offering both in-combat healing and out-of-combat utility during exploration – can significantly impact a team’s composition in most games. This role can even determine the success or failure of a team setup, even if a balanced party can occasionally manage without one.

From a healing perspective, I seamlessly blend into any team composition within the world of Avowed. Kai takes on tanking duties, Marius excels at ranged combat with his roguish and nature-like abilities, and Yatzli serves as our magic-wielding powerhouse. No matter how players choose to specialize their Envoy, I can extend the fight duration by keeping Kai, Marius, Yatzli, or even the Envoy themselves in the fray longer with my healing capabilities.
