Edward Zwick’s biographical crime drama “Trial by Fire“ has gained new momentum on “streaming platforms”. The 2018 film unfolds the emotionally charged tale of Cameron Todd Willingham (depicted by Jack O’Connell), a real-life individual who was wrongly convicted and put to death for the tragic fire-related deaths of his three young daughters. Accompanying O’Connell, “Trial by Fire” features Laura Dern as Elizabeth Gilbert, a character based on a real French teacher and playwright. After striking up a pen friendship and meeting with Willingham, Gilbert becomes an ardent supporter of his cause.
According to a 2009 article by well-known author David Grann, the book “Trial by Fire” delves into the questions about Willingham’s innocence and the attempts to prove it. As Gilbert dives deeper into the case, she starts to find evidence that casts doubt on his original conviction.
2018 saw the debut of “Trial by Fire” at the Telluride Film Festival, with a theater release following in 2019. However, its box office performance was underwhelming (earning less than $150,000 in North American theaters), and it received mixed reviews from both critics (63% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences (70%). Despite positive feedback for the performances of O’Connell and Dern, some viewers felt that the movie’s focus was too heavily weighted towards an anti-death penalty message rather than its primary characters. Five years after its initial release, “Trial by Fire” is now available on Netflix, where it currently ranks #3 in viewership as people tune in to explore this heartrending true tale.
The True Story Behind ‘Trial by Fire’
On December 23, 1991, a fire destroyed Willingham’s house in Corsicana, Texas, leading to the tragic deaths of his three daughters: Amber (age 2), Karmen (1-year-old twin), and Kameron (also 1-year-old twin). Investigators Douglas Fogg and Manuel Vasquez found evidence suggesting that this house fire was deliberately set. Given Willingham’s past arrests and history of domestic violence (not directed towards his daughters, but towards his wife Stacy), he became the main suspect. Consequently, he faced multiple murder charges, making him eligible for capital punishment in his home state.
In 1992, during his court case, Willingham refused a plea deal offering him life imprisonment in exchange for admitting guilt, as he continued to assert his innocence. He was eventually convicted of arson and murdering his three daughters, primarily based on two key pieces of evidence presented at the trial: firstly, the testimonies from the fire investigators, and secondly, a testimony from a jailhouse informant who alleged that Willingham had confessed to the crime.
After Willingham’s trial, the findings of the arson investigators have been largely discredited as unscientific, with an informant later retracting his testimony, admitting he was bribed by the prosecutor to lie for a lighter sentence. Willingham was executed in 2004. Unfortunately, due to a car accident that caused a spinal cord injury, Gilbert couldn’t attend the execution before Willingham’s death. Five years later, Willingham’s case was detailed in Grann’s article “Trial by Fire” for The New Yorker. Grann is also the author of other successful works like “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Lost City of Z“, both of which have been adapted into movies. You can stream Edward Zwicke’s “Trial by Fire” on Netflix, with Emily Meade, Jeff Perry, Jade Pettyjohn, Laura Dern, and Jack O’Connell in the cast.
