Actor Guy Pearce recently shared some troubling stories about working alongside Kevin Spacey during the filming of “L.A. Confidential” (1997). In a recent interview aimed at promoting his latest project, “The Brutalist,” Pearce became emotional as he reflected on his encounters with Spacey, who has faced accusations of sexual misconduct from more than a dozen individuals.
In an episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, Pearce revisited statements he made about Spacey back in 2018. At the time, Pearce had called Spacey a “handsy guy,” but provided little detail. Subsequently, Pearce issued a statement explaining that while he wasn’t sexually assaulted or molested, he felt uncomfortable. He also expressed regret for discussing his personal experience with Spacey.
Pearce now understands that he may not have fully acknowledged his encounters with Spacey during their time working together on the set of L.A. Confidential, as it appears that Spacey directed his attention towards Pearce.
Oh, that wasn’t much. To be honest, I was quite apprehensive of Kevin for about five months because he can be quite aggressive. Despite his impressive charm and exceptional skills, he could be intimidating. However, being young and somewhat vulnerable, I found myself easily swayed by him.
Pearce acknowledged his reluctance to label himself as a victim despite admitting that he may have been one to some extent. He clarified, “I was not a victim in the same way others have been at the hands of sexual predators.” Nevertheless, Spacey’s actions created an uncomfortable atmosphere on set for Pearce, who admitted feeling safer when another actor (Simon Baker) was present because he would receive more attention, as he was considered more attractive than Pearce.
2017 marked a significant downturn in Kevin Spacey’s career after Anthony Rapp made accusations of sexual abuse. This led Netflix to remove him from their series “House of Cards,” and since then, he has largely been shunned by Hollywood. Over time, more claims of sexual misconduct have surfaced, with over a dozen individuals accusing Spacey.

In terms of discussing their past experiences working with Spacey in the late 1990s, Pearce opted to share less detail but emphasizes truth in the current context. When Spacey faced professional downfall due to the #MeToo movement, numerous individuals spoke up about abuses by powerful men within the industry. Similarly, Pearce was deeply affected by Anthony Rapp’s allegations and chose to address them openly.
In London, I was engrossed in my work when I received news reports, which left me emotionally overwhelmed. I couldn’t control my tears, and they just kept flowing. It struck me forcefully the extent of the event’s effects, and how I had previously chosen to ignore or suppress it. This moment served as a powerful awakening for me.
Despite Spacey not being convicted for the severe accusations, Pearce continues to advocate for justice, ensuring that the actor does not escape the consequences of his actions. Although the interview didn’t solely focus on Spacey and his alleged misconduct, the topic was hard to overlook given the substantial storyline in The Brutalist where Pearce’s character, a figure with significant authority, sexually assaults another character. Tragically, the movie mirrors real life.
Regarding Spacey, Pearce stated that these days he strives to be more open and straightforward, labeling things as they truly are.
