Ben Browder Explains the “Fresh” Perspective He Brought to Stargate SG-1

Ben Browder played leading roles in not just one, but two highly influential SYFY original shows throughout his career. Now, let’s explore his perspective on his contributions to the later seasons of Stargate SG-1 as a Farscape veteran.

As a gamer, I stepped into the shoes of John Crichton in SYFY’s Farscape from 1999 to 2003. Later, I made a leap to Stargate SG-1 in 2005, taking on the leading role as Cameron Mitchell. This was after Richard Dean Anderson had moved into a supporting role for the final seasons of the show. Alongside my teammates, I guided the Stargate crew through Seasons 9 and 10, and even lent my presence to a couple of follow-up movies afterwards.

Christopher Judge Proposes a Stargate SG-1 Spinoff Drawing Similarities to Black Panther; Insights from Stargate SG-1 that Glassner Applies in The Ark

In this article, we delve into an exciting pitch by actor Christopher Judge for a spinoff of the popular series Stargate SG-1. This proposed project draws parallels with the acclaimed Marvel film Black Panther. Additionally, we explore how the insights gained during Jonathan Glassner’s tenure on Stargate SG-1 have been applied in the creation of The Ark.

In essence, Judge aims to create a spinoff that showcases a rich, diverse cast and a powerful, self-governing society, much like Wakanda in Black Panther. At the same time, Glassner, who has extensive experience working on both Stargate SG-1 and The Ark, brings valuable lessons from his past work to ensure the success of this new venture.

Ben Browder talks Stargate SG-1 role

In a 2007 interview with The SciFi World, at the conclusion of SG-1’s esteemed run as one of SYFY’s top original shows, Browder shared an exclusive viewpoint on the program’s enduring impact and his part in it. Taking over a highly successful, long-running series is never an effortless endeavor; however, for Browder, it represented an opportunity to contribute fresh elements to the series.

I appreciated how Mitchell gradually adapted to his position as leader of SG-1; he didn’t immediately come across as a ‘capable, I can do anything’ kind of leader. This transition felt realistic, and it was pleasing to see where his character was headed into the movies. Mitchell offers a new point of view. He doesn’t carry the baggage of past experiences, which can sometimes limit our perspective and options. Often, those who stray from the expected path end up achieving the most intriguing outcomes.

In Mitchell – a fresh character lacking the extensive space-exploring background of the rest of the seasoned Stargate team – viewers might discover a fresh perspective on the series as it introduces a new adversary and challenge for the show’s last seasons. Throughout the series, the SGC primarily fought against the Goa’uld alien factions, but the final seasons introduced the highly powerful Ascended Beings known as the Ori as an even more formidable threat.

Just like Mitchell introduced a fresh perspective to the situation, SG-1 was in the process of learning how to confront a completely new adversary. Couldn’t have been better timed!

Stargate creatives still on SYFY with The Ark

Essentially, the influence of the “Stargate” series is still prevalent on SYFY, as two prominent figures involved in the “Stargate” franchise have recently collaborated to create the original SYFY series titled “The Ark“.

100 years from now, “The Ark” – a series depicting the journey of space colonization survivors whose mission veers off course in deep space – is brought to you by Dean Devlin and Jonathan Glassner. Notably, Devlin was instrumental in creating the initial “Stargate” movie, while Glassner played a significant role in “SG-1”.
