Lonesome Dove

The Western genre is experiencing a resurgence on television, with notable creators like Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone) and Mark L. Smith (American Primeval on Netflix) leading the charge in the drama sphere. As these creative forces continue to shape the genre, studios are eagerly acquiring rights to classic works. For instance, Teton Ridge has recently obtained the rights to Larry McMurtry’s Pulitzer Prize-winning Lonesome Dove book series.

The novel titled “Lonesome Dove,” published in 1985, is the first book in McMurtry’s series (although it’s the third in chronological order), which also includes “Dead Man’s Walk,” “Comanche Moon,” and “Streets of Laredo.” This captivating story was adapted into a well-known miniseries in 1989, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Robert Duval. The plot revolves around two former Texas Rangers who find themselves restless while managing a cattle company. In an attempt to alleviate their boredom, they embark on a lengthy cattle drive from Texas all the way to Montana.

As a discerning film critic, I’m thrilled to share that Thomas Tull and Jillian Share, the visionary minds behind Teton Ridge Entertainment, are bringing the classic “Lonesome Dove” to life in a new adaptation. Whether it will grace our movie screens or unfold as a captivating TV series remains to be seen. In an exclusive interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Tull hinted at the project’s progress, keeping us all on tenterhooks!

‘Lonesome Dove’ stands as a magnificent portrayal of the resilient soul of the American Frontier, and we deeply appreciate the McMurtry family for collaborating with Teton Ridge Entertainment to reintroduce its evergreen motifs to fresh audiences.

Our commitment is to vividly tell a variety of tales set within the Western genre, doing so authentically and with heart. We’re proud and humbled by the McMurtry family placing their faith in us, regarding the project as one of the most significant pieces of entertainment legacy.

The New Rise of The Western

One distinctively American film genre is the Western. Originating from the rapid expansion of the nation towards the Pacific Ocean, it carries a romanticized yet often misconstrued image of the frontier that celebrates rugged individualism, sometimes through violent means, as a means to advance civilization. Often portrayed in media as moral stories about men carving out their existence against society rather than with it. However, one exceptional Western series, “Deadwood,” bucked this trend by presenting unexpectedly soft undertones and became one of the greatest shows ever made. As America re-embraces individualism at the expense of social programs and humanity, the Western might embody less romantic ideals but may mirror the more savage aspects of a society in decline.

As a passionate fan, I’m thrilled to share that Teton Ridge Entertainment, my go-to for all things Western, is an essential arm of Teton Ridge. This dynamic team not only excels in the genre but also oversees two iconic entities: The Cowboy Channel and The American Rodeo. Recently, they’ve acquired the rights to Louis L’Amour’s captivating novel “Fallon,” with Peter Chiarelli, the brilliant mind behind “Crazy Rich Asians,” on board to pen the screenplay. Exciting times ahead!
