Initially, Charlie Cox was asked to audition for a different character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe – the role of Matt Murdock’s best friend, Foggy Nelson, instead of Daredevil himself. However, now that he has portrayed Daredevil in the Netflix series (and is set to reprise his role in the Disney+ series “Daredevil: Born Again”), it seems hard to imagine him playing any other role. In fact, Cox even insisted on auditioning for the lead role after initially being offered Foggy Nelson.
In a recent conversation with GQ, Cox shared that the team behind Netflix’s “Daredevil,” which ran for three seasons before being discontinued in 2018, alongside other Marvel shows on the platform, appreciated him but not as the main character. However, Cox found his moment of self-empowerment and pursued the role of Matt Murdock instead. He stated:
For some unknown reason, after going through such an uplifting event, I declared, ‘I’ll be there, but I’ll only be reading for Matt, specifically for the main character.’
Charlie Cox Thought His Time as Daredevil Was Over After Netflix Cancellation
Charlie Cox has solidified his role as the definitive live-action Daredevil, having recently appeared in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) in movies like “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and the animated series “Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man.” But when the Netflix show was axed, Cox thought his days as the character were numbered. Reflecting on the abrupt cancellation, the actor shared…
Last night, I received a call with the news that all five shows produced by Marvel Television on Netflix had been canceled. The reason behind this decision seemed to involve some sort of dispute between Netflix and Disney, a conflict that was discussed in our conversation. My supervisors from both Netflix and Marvel were understanding and courteous during the process, but the outcome was inevitable.
After receiving positive feedback from viewers on the Netflix series and its main cast, Disney and Marvel Studios have decided to bring Charlie Cox back for the sequel series, Daredevil: Born Again. However, bringing back The Man Without Fear wasn’t without complications. At first, there were issues with what had been produced, but the show underwent a significant overhaul, with Cox stating “in an unusual turn of events, the strikes that were detrimental to many in the industry ended up being the best thing for our specific production.
In “Daredevil: Reborn,” villain Wilson Fisk seeks office as mayor, while Matt Murdock (played by Charlie Cox) finds himself working for him. The series also features Vincent D’Onofrio reprising his role as Fisk, known as the Kingpin, alongside Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal), Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll), Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), Bullseye (Wilson Bethel), and newcomers Margarita Levieva, Michael Gandolfini, and Genneya Walton. “Daredevil: Reborn” is set to debut on Disney+ on March 4, 2025, as part of Phase Five in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
