The Dune series, overseen by renowned director [blank], has proven to be a massive hit for Warner Bros., with a third installment currently in production. However, given the franchise’s financial success (often referred to as an “IP cash cow”), it is unlikely that the studio would want this lucrative property to conclude. Recent speculation suggests that a director is being sought for Dune 4, and this filmmaker has a reputation for managing large franchises…and creating colossal creatures.
Based on reports from insider Daniel Richtman, it’s being speculated that the director of Godzilla could potentially take over for Dune 4. Previously, Denis Villeneuve had stated that the third installment, Dune: Messiah, would be his final journey to Arrakis. At this point, this is merely a rumor, so it’s best to approach it with a bit of skepticism. However, given his history of stepping into big-name franchises like Godzilla, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and this year’s Jurassic World Rebirth, it’s understandable why he might be under consideration for a potential Dune 4. The director’s interpretation of the seminal sci-fi story would likely differ significantly from Villeneuve’s, but that could make for an interesting contrast.
2021 saw the debut of “Dune,” an adaptation of Frank Herbert’s famous novel’s first half. This film introduced viewers to Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, a young man fated to liberate the indigenous people on the treacherous planet Arrakis. The following year, “Dune: Part Two” continued the narrative, garnering praise from critics and numerous Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture.
‘Dune: Messiah’ & ‘Dune 4’ Will Be Far More Difficult To Adapt for the Big Screen
The third installment of the “Dune” series, titled “Dune: Messiah,” is moving forward swiftly. According to a recent report by Deadline, production on “Dune 3” may start earlier than previously anticipated. Overheard conversations suggest that director Denis Villeneuve will begin filming “Dune 3: Messiah” as early as June this year, instead of 2026. This news has caught everyone by surprise.
1969 saw the publication of “Dune Messiah,” Frank Herbert’s second novel in the Dune series, which delved deeper into the realm of hard science fiction. The upcoming film adaptation by Denis Villeneuve remains uncertain regarding its adherence to the book’s details (as he made alterations to the first novel for screen adaptation), but it has been confirmed that, similar to the original work, the story will commence with a significant leap forward in time.
Twelve years have passed since the events of Part Two, and when we rejoin our characters, they’re embarking on a fresh journey. Though it’s set in the same universe, this tale is distinctly different, making it a separate movie with unique situations.
In my humble opinion as a movie enthusiast, the fourth installment of “Dune” promises an adaptation of the novel “Children of Dune,” published in 1976. While “Dune Messiah” does introduce some unconventional aspects to the series, it is nothing compared to the intrigue and depth that unfolds in “Children of Dune” and beyond.
For now, we can only speculate about the release date for “Dune 4,” but “Dune: Messiah” is set to hit theaters on December 16, 2026. On a separate note, Gareth Edwards, our esteemed director, will kick off a new chapter in the “Jurassic Park” saga with “Jurassic World Rebirth,” scheduled for release by Universal Pictures on July 2, 2025.
