As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that I’ve teamed up with my fiancée, Dylan Meyer, to co-write an outrageous stoner comedy titled “The Wrong Girls.” We’re currently rolling cameras in the heart of Los Angeles, making it one of the pioneering independent films to resume production in the city post-wildfire. It’s a privilege to work alongside director Dylan Meyer, as well as acting powerhouses Alia Shawkat and Seth Rogen on this project.
The versatile Stewart recently chatted with IndieWire and shared insights on bringing the production to life, which seems akin to an expansive version of Broad City (a high praise coming from that writer). IndieWire’s report indicates that the comedic powerhouses Kumail Nanjiani, LaKeith Stanfield, Zack Fox, and Tony Hale are part of the supporting cast. Stewart expresses her excitement about the project, stating she is “jumping with joy” over its production, especially considering the challenging circumstances facing the LA film industry at present.
Years ago, Dylan penned the script for “The Wrong Girls,” and as a fan, I can hardly contain my enthusiasm! Shooting in L.A., a place that feels like a dream, only adds to the excitement. Alia Shawkat is my fellow “Wrong Girl,” and we’re currently piecing this project together, quite literally speaking.
We Need More Movies About Girlfriends Getting Into Wild Shenanigans Together
Previously, Shawkat and Stewart have collaborated before, as they were part of the 2010 film “The Runaways,” which focused on Cherie Currie (portrayed by Dakota Fanning) and Joan Jett’s (played by Stewart) experiences in the renowned band. In this movie, Shawkat took on the role of Robin Robins, a fictional character based on Jacqueline Fuchs, the actual bassist of the band. However, Fuchs declined to grant her life rights for the film, possibly because she had transitioned into an entertainment lawyer by the time the film was produced.
In a notable move, Neon is set to serve as the release partner for “The Wrong Girls”, a production that boasts an impressive 95% local Los Angeles cast and crew. With a significant portion of productions leaving the state due to tax incentives, and the devastating impact of recent fires on the entertainment industry, this statistic is worthy of celebration. Many in the city have been advocating for increased initiatives and financial incentives from the mayor and governor to keep productions within LA through the “Stay In LA” campaign. Notably, Todd Banhazl, an Emmy-nominated cinematographer known for his work on “Hustlers”, Ty Segall, a singer-songwriter, and Heidi Bivens, an Emmy-nominated costume designer famous for her work on “Euphoria”, are among the LA natives employed in this production.
This series titled “The Wrong Girls” centers around Frankie (Stewart) and Molly (Shawkat), a pair of financially strapped, inseparable friends who spend their days smoking one bong hit after another. However, an instance of mistaken identity turns their lives upside down. Not surprisingly, it appears to be the kind of rebellious, entertaining tale about friendship that we’ve been eagerly waiting for on the big screen.
This year, the comedy “One Of Them Days“—produced by Issa Rae and starring Keke Palmer and SZA—successfully satisfied this craving. And judging by its box office success, it seems we’re not alone in our appetite for more on-screen female friendships leading to wild escapades. More films like that, or “Bridesmaids“, “Girls Trip“, or “Joy Ride“, will only make us happier!
