Travis Knight’s upcoming movie titled “Masters of the Universe” is generating a lot of excitement, stemming from Mattel’s iconic superhero series of the same name. As production progresses, an impressive cast is being assembled, with three more significant roles recently added to the roster by well-known actors. First introduced as a hit toy line and animated show in the 80s, this franchise has since branched out into comics, films, and video games.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, three new actors have been added to the cast of the upcoming film co-produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel Films: Sasheer Zamata will play Suzie, Jon Xue Zhang has been cast as Ram-Man, and Christian Vunipola will portray Hussein. This announcement follows closely on the heels of James Purefoy and Charlotte Riley being confirmed as He-Man’s parents, King Randor and Queen Marlena, respectively.
The movie has been in development since November 2023, with the principal cast gradually being unveiled. First among them is Nicholas Galitzine portraying He-Man. Other confirmed actors include Jared Leto as Skeletor, Camila Mendes as Teela, Idris Elba as Man-at-Arms, Alison Brie as Evil-Lyn, Johannes Haukur Johannesson as Malcolm or Fisto, Hafthor Bjornsson as Goat Man, Sam C. Wilson as Trap Jaw, and Kojo Attah as Tri-Klops.
As a fan, I’m genuinely excited about the roles Jared Leto and Alison Brie are taking on in this upcoming film. They’re stepping into the shoes of Skeletor and Evil-Lyn, the film’s main antagonists, who have always been formidable adversaries to the hero He-Man. These villains have a knack for manipulating the noble hearts around them, making them dangerous and unpredictable. So, I can’t wait to see how Leto and Brie breathe life into these iconic characters!
Despite the storyline being kept secret for now, longtime fans are familiar with the fundamental concept. Essentially, the story of Masters of the Universe revolves around Prince Adam, also known as He-Man, who uncovers a hidden inheritance and takes on the task of safeguarding the mystical realm of Eternia from the evil Skeletor. However, it’s been hinted that the upcoming live-action adaptation will deviate substantially from the original animated series while still preserving its nostalgic appeal, as Galitzine suggested back in January.
Can ‘Masters of the Universe’ Break the Live-Action Curse?
Adapting fantasy stories from animated series into live-action hasn’t always been successful, as evidenced by past efforts with popular franchises like Pokémon, Dragon Ball, and Power Rangers. These adaptations have often fallen short in capturing audience interest. Even the Masters of the Universe franchise, which produced a live-action movie in the 1980s, didn’t do well. Given this history, it’s not surprising that people might be skeptical about the upcoming reboot.
With times constantly evolving, it’s now possible for movies heavily dependent on Computer-Generated Imagery (CGI) to bring even the most elaborate fantasy tales to life in a live-action format. Although fans of the established series might be hesitant about the upcoming movie, the joint creativity of director Travis Knight and screenwriter Chris Butler could yield better results than expected. This is mainly due to Knight’s previous successes, as he serves as the CEO of Laika and has directed their animated masterpiece, Kubo and the Two Strings, along with his live-action debut, the critically acclaimed Transformers spinoff titled, Bumblebee.
