Fans have been eagerly awaiting the release of Gears of War: E-Day, ever since it was first revealed at the 2024 Xbox Expo.
However, it turned out that the game had been under production for a considerably longer period than anticipated – specifically, more than five years. This makes it one of the longest development periods recorded in the history of the Gears series.
In this precursor story, set amidst the turmoil of Emergence Day, The Coalition has poured significant effort into its creation, with evidence suggesting that work on it may have begun as early as the start of 2020.
A Senior Designer at The Coalition, through their LinkedIn profile, subtly revealed the duration of E-Day’s production process. Initially unveiled by Deckard (@Freed091509) on platform X, this information was unearthed by delving into the game’s chronicles of development. The designer mentioned that the game has been under construction for a span of five years and two months.
As a devoted fan, I can tell you that it’s fascinating to learn that the groundwork for E-Day was already being laid, hidden from our eyes, before its grand unveiling. Given the typical lengthy development process of AAA games, this timeline suggests that E-Day has been a priority in the making, even during the final years of Gears 5.
Besides The Coalition, it’s been confirmed that People Can Fly, known for their work on previous Gears games like Judgment, are also contributing to E-Day. This collaboration appears to be expanding the game’s potential while preserving the elements that made the Gears series distinctive.
As an ardent fan, I can’t help but wonder, with the five-year development phase now completed, how much longer do we eagerly anticipate this arrival? Regrettably, Microsoft has not yet disclosed a concrete launch date; however, most predictions point towards either 2025 or early 2026.
Enthusiasts anticipate that the upcoming Xbox event might unveil all details of E-Day (possibly showcasing initial gameplay), while some are apprehensive due to a prolonged development cycle hinting at potential issues within the project, as we’ve observed with other games that took more time than anticipated.
Currently, everyone is eagerly awaiting Microsoft’s upcoming presentation. If the rumors about E-Day being under development for such a lengthy period are true, then it’s likely that we’ll unveil more details about it in the near future.
