In conversation with Friday Talkies, Apoorva Lakhia reminisced about his first film, Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost, and his aspiration to cast Abhishek Bachchan for the lead role. The filmmaker shared that Pahlaj Nihalani’s son, Vicky, had proposed to fund his debut production. After a quick chat, they all agreed on Abhishek for the part. Subsequently, they approached the actor, who was gaining popularity at the time.
It seems that the Ghoomer actor expressed enjoyment of the movie, but discussions about it remained stagnant for approximately six months. This led the Dus Kahaniyaan producer to believe that Abhishek might accept the film offer since he had invested so much time into it. To clarify, the producer explained that when one meets Junior Bachchan, they often find themselves at a loss for words.
A week after his call, they’re given the opportunity for a cappuccino, indicating progress. By the fourth or fifth meeting, they’re offered dried fruits. Lakhia joked, “That means you have the go-ahead. And when sandwiches and more start appearing, you can be sure we’ll begin filming soon.
Although it seemed like good fortune for the director, things didn’t turn out as expected. Around half a year later, Abhishek contacted the up-and-coming director and expressed that the movie had to be made, but not with him. “I got really angry at him, grabbed my script from his hand, and said ‘No problem,’ before walking away,” he recounted. Yet, a week following this encounter, Apoorva Lakhia received a call from Abhishek’s secretary, marking the beginning of an intriguing turn of events.
