For 16 years now, Will Smith‘s character John Hancock, who was once reckless and an alcoholic with superhuman abilities, has taken on the role of protecting Los Angeles. Now, after numerous delays, it appears that a sequel to the 2008 action-comedy “Hancock” is actually in the works, with its main star confirming this exciting news. Additionally, there are plans for MCU actress Zendaya to secure a significant role in the upcoming film.

The movie titled Hancock, helmed by Peter Berg and penned by Vince Gilligan and Vy Vincent Ngo, turned out to be an extraordinary box office sensation, raking in a whopping $629 million against a production budget of just $150 million. Despite the abundance of superhero films back then, Will Smith’s pulse-pounding action flick brought a refreshing twist to the genre, sparking immense anticipation among fans for a follow-up.

During a recent live stream on Twitch, an Oscar-winning actor responded to a variety of fan queries. When asked about his future undertakings, the star of Men in Black disclosed that a long-awaited sequel to Hancock is being developed, and there are discussions underway for Zendaya to take on a significant role in it. He explicitly mentioned this fact.

‘Hancock 2’ Has Been in Development Limbo Since 2009

It’s hard to believe it’s been seventeen years since we last saw Hancock on the big screen, given that the initial film was a massive box office success. In fact, it ranked fourth among the highest-grossing films of 2008, just behind The Dark Knight, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and Kung Fu Panda. Even before its release, director Peter Berg had predicted that if the movie performed as well as expected, a sequel would follow shortly after.

Following the digital release of the movie, Smith reassured fans that a follow-up was under development and also hinted at constructing an entirely fresh universe brimming with original concepts. Later on, Columbia Pictures enlisted screenwriters Adam Fierro (“The Shield”) and Glen Mazzara (“The Walking Dead”) in August 2009. Berg subsequently announced a third actor to join Charlize Theron and Will Smith as another superhuman character. Jump ahead ten years, and Theron has expressed her desire to reprise her role for “Hancock 2,” but admitted that the project hasn’t made any significant strides in its development.

Due to the lengthy development phase of the project, there’s no guarantee that things will change this time around. However, with Zendaya, a highly-demanded actor in Hollywood, cast for the role, it seems the studio is giving the sequel more attention.
