Following Schmid’s discussion on playing Franks in 1982-set flashbacks, the impactful strain on Franks’ bond with Tish, and the significant aspects of Franks’ life he looks forward to delve into in Origins, I wrapped up my latest interview with him by inquiring about his favorite aspect of collaborating with Stowell. His response:
Austin is dedicated, and it’s wonderful to collaborate with him because his dedication mirrors mine. Our work styles are quite aligned; when we’re engaged, we’re fully committed. Thus, it’s not merely Kyle working with Austin. It’s more like Mike Franks and Gibbs conversing, and in both character and reality, Austin and I share a strong bond. I believe there’s an affection between us that effortlessly shines through on-screen.
It’s delightful to see Kyle Schmid and Austin Stowell get along so well, not just in front of the camera but also behind it. Given that the show NCIS: Origins, which can be watched with a Paramount+ subscription, largely centers around Mike Franks teaching Leroy Jethro Gibbs the ropes of being an NCIS agent, it’s crucial that the actors captured the right dynamic between their characters. Since they both approach their roles similarly, it seems they managed to pull this off effortlessly. Schmid further explained:
Working together feels effortless and comfortable, no matter the situation or scene. It’s a pleasure to allow characters to interact naturally, as if they understand each other intuitively. This collaboration truly simplifies the creative process.
Although Gibbs and Frank haven’t quite achieved the same level of camaraderie they had on NCIS yet, they’ve already shared a significant amount of experiences in just under a year. It all began when Frank was assigned to probe the death of Gibbs’ wife and daughter, which ultimately led him to share all the evidence he’d gathered on their murderer, drug dealer Pedro Hernandez, with Gibbs. Frank also played a role in recruiting Gibbs to his team after Gibbs became an NIS agent, and at this point in the NCIS timeline, he is one of the few individuals aware that Gibbs took the life of Hernandez. The upcoming year working together on Origins promises even more intriguing developments between these two characters.
I’m hoping that NCIS: Origins will have a Season 2, just so Kyle Schmid and Austin Stowell can keep acting together. We only have five episodes left in Season 1, so don’t forget to watch every Monday at 10 pm ET on CBS.
