nARCHITECTS Designs Timber Interiors & Statement Stairs For Secluded NY Lakehouse

As a passionate admirer, I’m thrilled to share that nARCHITECTS, an architectural firm based in Brooklyn, has revealed a unique project tailored for their own family – a gem known as the CLT House. Situated by the serene lakeside in Dutchess County, this design is thoughtfully crafted to minimize disturbance to the local ecosystem during construction and beyond.

The prefabricated concrete foundation of the home was put in place within a week, followed by the installation of the entire structure made from cross-laminated timber (CLT) in just 11 days. Geothermal wells and a radiant floor system help regulate temperature inside, while solar panels on the roof generate enough power for everyday needs. Moreover, the architects positioned the house 200 feet away from the lake to preserve its ecosystem, removed invasive water plants, and introduced beneficial local species to the property instead.

Beyond the inviting aesthetic appeal of the material, Cross-Laminated Timber (CLT) is gaining traction due to its environmental advantages, efficiency, and fire-resistant characteristics. In another part of the building’s exterior, I appreciate how nARCHITECTS employed an age-old wooden cladding technique from our colonial forefathers, lending a rustic charm in contrast to modern design.

Spacious windows let in plenty of sunshine indoors, mirroring cozy tones from the wooden elements, and skylights create distinctive patterns of light and dark during different times of day. Instead of uniform interior materials, a vibrant green industrial-style staircase offers a modern splash of color to the layout.
