According to Deadline, it has been announced that Netflix is set to produce a movie titled “Sifu”. The renowned director of “John Wick“, Chad Stahelski, will play a significant role as one of the main producers for this upcoming film.
For those not familiar, Sifu is one of the trendiest action-packed brawlers released recently. Originally debuting on PlayStation consoles in 2022 as an exclusive title, this game allows you to assume control over a martial artist seeking revenge for his father’s demise.
Should you meet demise during the course of the game, a mystical artifact known as a talisman will resurrect your character, though they will appear somewhat older. Yet, this experience has granted them additional wisdom and equipped them with novel resources to aid them in their journey ahead.
The idea is intriguing, yet the execution seems exceptionally smooth. Given that the main focus is on hand-to-hand combat, it wouldn’t be difficult to imagine a filmmaker like Stahelski, known for his expertise in action scene direction, contributing his skills to the director who takes over this project.
The screenplay is being written by T.S. Nowlin, a writer known for his work on The Maze Runner series, Pacific Rim: Uprising, and Netflix’s The Adam Project.
More details about the rest of the team aren’t available, but the unique concept of Sifu allows us to imagine various actors who could play the main character. Depending on how closely they stick to the original story, seasoned actors like Keanu Reeves are who we envision when thinking about gruff, older martial artists getting ready for one final fight.
It seems we’re entering another era of movie adaptations from video games, as the Sonic and Super Mario Bros franchises lead the way, followed by a forthcoming live-action Street Fighter film from Capcom. A new director has been appointed for this project, which is slated for release in March 2026.
In the Secret Level TV series on Amazon Prime, Sifu was among the games highlighted. This suggests that Hollywood believes further development of this idea, under the right leadership, could be a certain hit.
