Titled as a sequel, the shocking documentary film “Leaving Neverland” by HBO and director Dan Reed, which won an Emmy Award and sparked heated debates due to sexual assault allegations against Michael Jackson, is set for a return on screens under a new movie called “Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson“. However, it’s important to note that the original HBO documentary team will not be involved in this project. The reason behind their absence might come as a surprise to many.
According to a recent article from Deadline, it’s been announced that Leaving Neverland 2 is set to air on Channel 4 in the UK on March 18, 2025. This sequel will pick up where the original left off, focusing on Wade Robson and James Safechuck – two individuals who allege they were sexually assaulted by Michael Jackson when they were minors. In this follow-up film, we’ll see how their lives have been affected since these accusations were brought to light.
What Is ‘Leaving Neverland 2: Surviving Michael Jackson’ About And Why Isn’t HBO Involved?
Leaving Neverland 2: Persevering Through Michael Jackson is rumored to depict Safechuck, Robson, and their legal advisors’ efforts to seek justice for the abuse they suffered as minors. This hour-long production, as stated by Channel 4 representatives, will delve into not just the professional, but also the personal repercussions, of speaking out against one of the most iconic musical figures in history. The documentary is expected to showcase the opposition faced from Jackson’s dedicated (and globally expansive) fanbase, as well as the Jackson Estate.
As reported by Deadline, Reed and his film crew were granted exclusive rights to cover the hearings, which are expected to play a significant role in the upcoming documentary. Moreover, Channel 4 has hinted that the film will expose the lengths MJJ Productions and MJJ Ventures allegedly went to prevent Safechuck and Robson from bringing their allegations to court.
It’s quite intriguing to delve into the cause that led HBO to part ways with the project, despite its Emmy-winning accolades. Interestingly enough, it seems that HBO found themselves in a legal battle with the Jackson Estate. The Estate claimed that an earlier documentary by HBO was a violation of a non-disparagement clause from a contract regarding an HBO concert special based on Michael Jackson’s Dangerous tour from 1992. In the end, the US courts ruled in favor of the Estate.
At the time of the lawsuit, Jackson Estate lawyers Howard Weitzman and Jonathan Steinsapir said:
Both the initial trial judge and subsequently the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals have all denied HBO’s claims. In their own terms, HBO ‘admitted that they wouldn’t make any derogatory comments about Jackson.’ Now, it’s HBO’s turn to face consequences for breaching their commitments towards Michael Jackson.
As a cinema enthusiast, I must add that while it’s true the judges concurred with HBO’s viewpoint that the estate’s legal action might appear “unnecessary” in their bid to dismiss, it was beyond the court’s jurisdiction to deem anything as unnecessary or frivolous. Their role was merely to verify if the 1992 contract clause remained valid, even years after the contract ended following Michael Jackson’s passing on June 25, 2009.
Switch over to Channel 4 as they acquire and further develop content that HBO could no longer manage legally. The sequel to Leaving Neverland, titled as such by producer Dan Reed and his production company Amos Pictures, was directed by Reed. Marguerite Gaudin produced the film, while Peter Haddon and Ben Hills served as editors. Iris Maor oversaw production, with Adam Vandermark commissioning the project for Channel 4. Given that the original documentary won an Emmy and a BAFTA TV award for Best Factual Series, it’s likely we’ll continue to uncover more from the mysterious events at Neverland Ranch. However, let’s refrain from questioning Macaulay Culkin about it.
