Contains spoilers for “Chicago Med” Season 10, Episode 13 — “Take a Look in the Mirror”
Throughout Season 10, the character Mitch Ripley from “Chicago Med,” portrayed by Luke Mitchell, has been spiraling. His struggle with the loss of his best friend has driven him to abuse alcohol, leading to a violent altercation in episode “Take a Look in the Mirror.” Unfortunately, the person he assaults, Adam O’Rourke (Jake Elkins), ends up injured and needing medical attention. This incident leaves Mitch in a state of distress as he tries desperately to rectify his mistake. Instead of allowing Dr. John Frost, a fellow resident attending physician, to handle the case, Mitch oversteps boundaries by proposing various hasty solutions for O’Rourke’s condition.
When a last-ditch effort by Mitch fails, he urgently conveys to Frost the extent of his excessive involvement in the case, a disclosure that results in him being dismissed from the patient’s medical team. Subsequently, Mitch learns from Sharon Goodwin (played by S. Epatha Merkerson) that Adam will pull through after kidney removal surgery, but his wife intends to sue the hospital. To add to Mitch’s troubles, Sharon has put him on leave and suggested termination of his employment.
Despite the commotion suggesting that Mitch may lose his job due to his mistake, it’s not likely that Luke Mitchell will exit the series. This is because he appears in synopses for upcoming episodes, such as Episode 15 of Season 10 where Mitch works to rescue a child from a well. Such heroics are reminiscent of the kind that saved Doug Ross’ career on “ER,” so it wouldn’t be surprising if Mitch manages to recover. Instead, it seems that Mitch’s relationship with Dr. Hannah Asher (Jessy Schram) may not last; their relationship takes a turn for the worse in “Take a Look in the Mirror,” marking the end of Hannah’s Season 10 redemption arc.
Are Hannah and Mitch finally done?
Hannah has had issues with Mitch due to his drinking habits, which is problematic given her past as a recovering drug addict and her reluctance to join in his late-night activities. To compound the situation, Mitch repeatedly misses his obligations, putting both his job and their relationship at risk through his questionable decisions. In the end, when forced to confront the consequences of his actions in “Take a Look in the Mirror,” Hannah can only express her shock as she has to remind him of the time he came close to taking a life.
“But I helped save him,” Mitch argues, sobbing. “I fixed it.”
She replies, “Is that your conclusion? I’m at a loss for words,” she says, spinning on her heels and departing. This may signal the end for their strained relationship, with viewers debating that the show ended the wrong couple in Season 9, and they haven’t delivered standout episodes for “Chicago Med” since then. Whether Mitch can recover and repair his past mistakes with Hannah – and other relationships – remains to be seen.
