Here are two of A24’s standout films, “Moonlight” and “Spring Breakers“, are making a comeback in IMAX theaters. However, movie enthusiasts will need to act fast as both films will only be playing for one night each. According to Variety, Barry Jenkins’ moving drama “Moonlight“, which initially debuted in 2016, is set to return on February 27th as part of the A24 x IMAX Present series that features A24 classics by screening them in large format for the first time. The second film chosen this time is “Spring Breakers“, a 2013 crime comedy written and directed by Harmony Korine, which will be re-released on March 19th.
The groundbreaking film, Moonlight, created quite a stir upon its debut and had an exceptionally eventful awards ceremony run due to this. This award-winning masterpiece garnered three Oscars, among them the Best Picture Award at the 89th Academy Awards in 2017. The movie unfolds the life of its central figure, Chiron, across three distinct phases: his childhood (portrayed by Alex R. Hibbert), adolescence (Ashton Sanders), and adulthood (Trevante Rhodes). Viewers follow Chiron’s journey as he grapples with being a gay African-American man, experiencing the hardships he faced during his upbringing, including abuse.
A24 experienced another triumph with the release of Spring Breakers, raking in profits despite its modest budget. In no time, it became a beloved cult film, captivating audiences with an intense narrative that many consider one of the greatest spring break movies ever made. The movie centers around four college students who resort to robbing a restaurant to finance their Florida spring break vacation. However, they unwittingly become entangled with a criminal named Alien (played by James Franco), leading them into a vibrant underworld of crime, drugs, and violence illuminated by neon lights.
Older Movie Titles Returning to Theaters Is a Growing Trend
Re-releasing films on the big screen after their initial cinema run is not a novel concept; anniversary showings have been in vogue for quite a while. Notable instances include the reappearance of John Wick to celebrate its 10th anniversary, and the return of Godzilla Minus One for the King of Monsters’s 70th birthday celebration, complete with 13 minutes of exclusive extra footage.
Over the past few years, I’ve noticed movie studios have stepped up their re-release game quite a bit, even bringing back films that aren’t necessarily marking a significant anniversary. Just last year, according to Variety, around 27 classic movies were revisited on the big screen in over 100 US theaters! Among them was the epic Lord of the Rings trilogy, which made its comeback prior to The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim hitting theaters in December.
A24 is jumping on the bandwagon, like many other studios, to bring back films from its elite collection to the big screen again. Kicking off in March 2024, their screening series began with a re-release of Alex Garland’s Ex Machina, timing it perfectly with the excitement surrounding his upcoming film, Civil War. Among the well-loved titles getting a second chance are Hereditary, Midsommar, Uncut Gems, and Everything Everywhere All at Once, but don’t forget to catch Moonlight and Spring Breakers as well.
