It was a period of immense darkness for humanity, and if not for the story of Machine Gun Preacher and Childers, many people might have remained oblivious to the suffering that took place there.

Beyond portraying the war in a cinematic perspective, the film was also crafted in a raw, authentic manner suitable for its grim subject matter. The narrative revolves around Childers, a former criminal and associate of a drug-trafficking motorcycle gang. Miraculously, he transforms into a priest and missionary. However, after seeing the horrific reality of children being murdered, enslaved, and tormented in that area, his compassion compels him to help as many as possible – even if it means taking up arms.

However, the film chose to present him truthfully, showing his imperfections and complexities that make him an anti-hero in many aspects.

In her own questionable history, Lynn not only finds redemption but rescues Sam as well. However, she must bear the agony of watching him depart for distant lands to risk his life saving strangers, leaving her uncertain if they’ll ever meet again. Despite these ambiguous circumstances, the film and its characters prove captivating. Their complex pasts drive them towards a greater purpose, granting them courage that few could muster in our stead. As of now, Machine Gun Preacher can be streamed on Tubi.
