At the 2025 Spirit Awards, it was a mix of joy and sadness for the team behind the show “How to Die Alone.” Creator and lead actress Natasha Rothwell graciously received the award for best ensemble in a new scripted series. This recognition came for the critically acclaimed comedy that unfortunately had been canceled only months after its premiere on Hulu.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share my heartfelt admiration for Rothwell. Her tribute was overflowing with emotion, even her beta blocker couldn’t contain it! She jokingly added that the medication didn’t stop her from feeling emotional. She specifically acknowledged the team behind the series, giving a shout-out to her fellow cast members by name. The producers, writers, crew, and those who helped assemble the ensemble were all recognized. What an incredible display of gratitude!
Rothwell stated that the production aimed to find humor, warmth, and a sense of humanity amidst life’s complexities. She emphasized how meaningful it was for these aspects to be celebrated, and she expressed gratitude towards her producers, crew, and family for assisting in telling this story so effectively.
She expressed her gratitude by saying that it was your commitment, originality, and enthusiasm that shaped this production into what it has become, and she will always be thankful for it.
Regarding the roles we played, she expressed, “You breathed such soul into these characters, and it’s an honor to have acted alongside you on-screen.
In discussing the series and her storytelling techniques more generally, Rothwell commented, “How to Die Alone” explores the importance of being acknowledged, of feeling valued exactly as you are. For Black narratives, visibility isn’t a luxury; it’s essential. We have the right to occupy space, to be multifaceted, to be funny and to embody all aspects of humanity.
Although Rothwell mentioned during the news of cancellation that she would seek a new place for the series, she didn’t provide details on these plans in her speech. However, she appeared hopeful about the future and hinted that fans of the brief series, revolving around Rothwell’s character – a single JFK airport employee who transforms her life following a near-death experience – should remain vigilant for further updates.
Despite our time on this series being unexpectedly limited, I’m confident that I crafted something exceptionally unique, something that will endure. For those who resonated with the show and felt isolated, take comfort. This is merely one tale among many more that I have to share with you all.
Towards the end of her speech, Rothwell voiced her solidarity with the transgender community, who are currently facing attacks, following President Donald Trump’s anti-transgender executive orders.
Or:
In the final part of her speech, Rothwell made it clear that she stands with the transgender community, who are being targeted at present, due to President Donald Trump’s anti-transgender policies.
Or:
As her speech drew to a close, Rothwell demonstrated her political stance, speaking up for the beleaguered transgender community, in light of President Donald Trump’s recent anti-transgender executive orders.
Just wanted to let you know, you’re not on your own,” she shared, speaking directly to the transgender community. “We recognize and acknowledge your presence. All of us are here for you.
Currently, Rothwell is appearing in the third installment of HBO’s “The White Lotus,” continuing her character from the first season of the show. Recently, she had a little get-together with her fellow stars from season three of “The White Lotus” on stage, as they presented her with an award. This was orchestrated by Carrie Coon and Walton Goggins.
Hulu recently decided to discontinue the television series “How to Die Alone,” produced by Onyx Collective, around four months following the conclusion of its initial season on the streaming platform owned by Disney.
When the announcement about the show’s cancellation came on Instagram, Rothwell expressed his feelings by saying, “It’s tough to grasp this reality… I feel deeply for the dedicated cast, crew, and writers who poured their hearts into our tale. I’m thankful for this amazing experience, and I want to express my gratitude for all the love and support we received. I hope that this news will just be a brief interruption in the HTDA story, not an ending. Let’s move forward.
This year marked the 40th edition of the Spirit Awards, held at Santa Monica’s beachfront, with Aidy Bryant serving as the host. The event was live-streamed simultaneously on IMDb and Film Independent’s YouTube channels.
