Denzel Washington has amassed a variety of prestigious awards including Oscars and Golden Globes for his performances in “Glory” and “Training Day”. He’s also made a strong impact in theater, winning a Tony for his portrayal of Troy Maxson in “Fences”, a role he later reprised on the big screen. While there are many enjoyable roles with Denzel Washington, this film is a must-see, as it received an 89% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
In a different wording: Man on Fire, helmed by Tony Scott, is an action-packed thriller boasting Denzel Washington, Dakota Fanning, and Christopher Walken in lead roles. Although it didn’t impress critics much, the public appreciated its action scenes, characters, emotional depth, and remarkable acting – particularly Washington’s performance. Despite its mixed reviews from critics, the movie handles its storyline competently and keeps viewers engaged even during its darker, violent moments.
The Vengeance-Filled Narrative of ‘Man on Fire’
The movie centers around John Creasy (Denzel Washington), a former CIA agent now working as a bodyguard. His current assignment is to protect young Pita Ramos (Dakota Fanning). A strong connection develops between them. Unfortunately, events take a turn when she gets kidnapped, causing suspicion to fall on him, leading him to launch a brutal series of attacks in Mexico City. The film offers all the classic ingredients of an action-thriller: action, tension, enigma, and disorder.
In the movie, Creasy faces a constant struggle against corrupt law enforcement and searches for the criminals responsible for Pita’s kidnapping. He encounters obstacles at every juncture, and he must tread carefully because Pita’s enigmatic captors frequently threaten to harm her as a means of punishing the Ramos family. Fierce interrogations and nerve-racking standoffs occur as Creasy works tirelessly to unmask the suspects and motives behind the kidnapping. The climax of the plot comes as a surprise, and the movie’s conclusion leaves viewers in awe, although it may be frustrating at times.
Washington and Fanning Give Notable Performances in ‘Man on Fire’
Initially, Robert De Niro was favored for the role of John Creasy, but Washington eventually emerged as the top contender due to his previous collaboration with Tony Scott on the 1995 film “Crimson Tide.” While De Niro might have delivered a strong performance, Washington truly showcases his acting prowess in the character of Creasy. It’s been observed that Washington has a knack for driving the storyline, lending it an authentic emotional depth, even during the most graphic scenes.
Dakota Fanning’s portrayal in the film was widely acclaimed as exceptional, given that she was only nine years old during shooting. Her on-screen chemistry with Washington was appreciated by audiences, despite the limited screen time they shared. Even viewers who were initially hesitant due to the film’s violent content found pleasure in their acting performances. Both actors received recognition for their work, with Washington earning an NAACP Image Award nomination and Fanning receiving a Critics’ Choice Award nod.
The Split Between Critics and Audiences for ‘Man on Fire’
Although the movie garnered an impressive 89% audience approval on Rotten Tomatoes, it only received a modest 38% rating from critics. This significant difference can be attributed to the general consensus among the critic community that the film’s overly grim narrative was a detriment. The storyline refused to lighten up at any point, instead becoming progressively darker as it unfolded. Furthermore, the film’s extended runtime of 150 minutes added to its difficulties. Critics were also critical of the vigilante theme, suggesting that the brutal approach presented an unnecessary solution to a complex societal issue that required more thoughtful handling.
Viewers found the movie’s violence overly abundant but didn’t let that affect their overall feelings about it. They appreciated the acting, particularly by Washington and Fanning, and praised the humanistic themes woven into the storyline. However, some viewers were displeased with the editing and cinematography, pointing out that the film used quick cuts, flashy transitions, and other stylistic elements excessively, which detracted from the viewing experience. Critics shared similar concerns.
In spite of the film’s minor flaws, fans of Washington might want to give it a watch, just to catch another exceptional performance by him. Man on Fire can be streamed on AMC+.
