Caution: This discussion might contain spoilers for those who haven’t seen the finale of High Potential’s Season 1 on ABC or Hulu yet. Proceed with caution!
Following an unusually peaceful stretch – considering the backdrop of enigmatic homicides – Kaitlin Olson’s debut dramedy, High Potential, delivered a triple-cliffhanger ending that leaves other 2025 TV shows struggling to keep pace. Not only did JD Pardo’s character Tom reappear (only to be left stranded once more), but there was also a significant improvement in the status of Roman, and the emergence of a villain bent on countering Morgan.
From the captivating world of cinematic artistry, as portrayed by the charismatic David Giuntoli in shows like “Grimm” and “A Million Little Things,” the Season 1 antagonist of “High Potential” is a unique breed unlike any we’ve seen before. He has an affinity for games, an intelligence that rivals Morgan’s, and the audacity to challenge the LAPD head-on. The fact that he managed to evade capture at the end of the episode suggests ominous days ahead for Kaitlin Olson’s brilliant consultant.
When the series comes back for Season 2, the chaos could unfold in numerous ways, contingent upon whether or not the Game Master’s true identity will be unveiled as a significant plot point. If that’s the case, I’ve compiled various theories, some of which seem grounded in reality, while others lean more towards speculation and wild theories.
He’s Morgan’s Biological Brother Whose Existence She’d Repressed
A shocking family secret, such as a hidden sibling, is a staple in gripping TV dramas, and _High Potential_ seems to be following suit with its enigmatic Game Master character. Moreover, not only does the cunning antagonist display his sharp intelligence, but Morgan also touches upon a troubling memory concerning her father. The tone of her narrative suggests that this may be one of the rare instances where she reveals details about how her father influenced her upbringing.

1. As a film enthusiast, I had the privilege of learning about the heartwarming story behind ‘The Sweetest Moment’ shared between Amirah J and Kaitlin Olson from High Potential’s Amirah J herself.
2. In my conversations with High Potential’s Amirah J, she opened up about Ava’s thoughts when Ludo collapsed in their latest film.
In simpler terms, the tale revolves around Morgan and her father, who owned HPI. His ownership led him to view his daughter and her second-grade friends playing Jacks, a game considered basic, with disapproval. It appears this attitude could have been present during other events of that time, and he likely would have had similar strict and critical expectations for any other siblings Morgan may have had.
Intriguingly, if it turns out that the Game Master is actually Morgan’s older or younger sibling whom she has intentionally suppressed and erased from her memories for some unknown reason, this revelation would add an extra layer of complexity to the series. This sibling might have performed a similar trick in their past which led to them being removed by authorities or child services.
He’s Morgan’s Biological Brother That She Never Knew Existed
It seems far-fetched, even I find it hard to believe, but what if the reason Morgan might not remember her supposed biological sibling is because this sibling was actually the result of their father’s affair with a different woman, making them not biologically related to Morgan as we thought?
Perhaps I can relate to this Game Master on a personal level. It seems his turbulent childhood may have driven him to seek answers about his past, leading him to question the legitimacy of everything associated with his father, even his own sister, who was previously unknown to him. Could it be that all those intricate and daring kills were merely tests to verify if Morgan possessed the intelligence he believed his sibling would have?
He’s Morgan’s Secret Admirer Trying To Impress Her
If David Giuntoli’s character wasn’t solely focused on strengthening family ties, it might suggest that he harbors other hidden intentions. Instead of a familial connection, it appears that the Game Master could be developing romantic feelings for Morgan and is attempting to gain her notice in an unusual manner: by threatening her coworker’s life through near-drowning.
He may not have been skilled in attempting to win her over; instead, his approach to love might resemble the most disastrous of situations, as if the character Cupid was adorned with a mask reminiscent of Billy the Puppet from the infamous Saw series.
He’s A Friend That Tom Hired To Stalk Morgan For Jilting Him
Let me share an idea with you. JD Pardo’s character, Tom, was thoroughly enamored by Morgan, which led him to frequently ask her out and spend time together. She often responded positively, albeit with the condition that she would prioritize her family and her new consulting role. Despite seeming to comprehend this, he persisted in trying to win her over, only to find himself left alone at every juncture.
Instead of seeking vengeance in the traditional way, Morgan might consider collaborating with a cunning murderer whose abilities seem tailor-made for his unique intelligence traits. While Tom may not appear as an overly immature troublemaker who can’t accept rejection and likely has no problem finding other romantic interests without resorting to violence, he could be the perfect ally to keep suspicion at bay.
He’s Actually Morgan’s Missing Ex Roman
Could it be possible that the two most intriguing enigmas in Morgan’s current existence are, in fact, interconnected aspects of a single mystery? Might it not be the case that the Game Master character portrayed by Giuntoli is, in truth, the elusive Roman, who after his time as an informant, experienced such turmoil and disarray in his life that he ultimately transformed into a meticulous murderer?
It’s clear that Olson’s character would undoubtedly recognize the father of her first child, thus Roman likely needed to undergo significant changes, including extensive plastic surgery. However, the man who assisted Morgan in the parking lot seems much whiter than one might expect from a man named Roman Sinquerra, which could potentially present challenges for the creative team of High Potential.
He’s Someone From Karadec’s Past With A Score To Settle
Considering all the focus on Morgan in the given scenarios, it seems plausible that she might not be the ultimate target. Given her relatively short tenure with the LAPD, there’s a possibility that the Game Master could be someone whose past misdeeds have made them a target of Karadec. This person, who was previously apprehended by Detective Morgan, may now seek revenge on the detective who brought them to justice.
It’s not very probable since Morgan is our central character, but it could add intrigue if we find out that all characters were chasing a false lead about Morgan’s connection to the murderer, when in fact they were all wrong. As Season 1 progressed, viewers got glimpses of Karadec’s past. In a similar vein, I can imagine the show using some of his old cases as a basis for current storylines.
He’s A Total Stranger With Zero Connections To Main Characters
It seems quite astonishing, but it looks like the Game Master villain had no prior connection with Morgan, her relatives, or anyone specific at the LAPD before these series of murder plans. His reasons for this are completely detached from any incidents involving Morgan and Roman’s past, instead being driven by personal gain and random impulses.
Ha! That’s quite a stretch. If it turns out that David Giuntoli’s character has no connection whatsoever with any of the others, I’d consider applying for a position with the LAPD, perhaps as a detective – or if that’s too ambitious, maybe even as a custodian.
As a movie critic, I’m eagerly anticipating Season 2 of “High Potential,” where we’re left guessing about the true intentions of David Giuntoli’s enigmatic character. This season-long mystery promises to keep us on our toes! In the meantime, why don’t we take a break and have a go at a game of jacks?
