In a continuation from the prequel “1883” and leading up to the series “Yellowstone,” Taylor Sheridan’s show titled “1923” offers an engrossing glimpse into another part of the Dutton family history. The second season of “1923” picks up where the first left off, with the Duttons, headed by Jacob (Harrison Ford) and his wife Cara (Helen Mirren), battling various threats to keep their lands secure.
In Season 1 of 1923, the tough struggle for survival faced by Spencer Dutton (Brandon Sklenar), following his time in Africa, was contrasted with the perils confronting his family back in Montana. The intense gunfight between the Duttons and Banner Creighton’s (Jerome Flynn) group serves as a vivid portrayal of the ongoing conflict in Montana – a battle that pulls Spencer back to his roots.
In much the same fervor and urgency, Episode 1 of the series is filled as every member of the Dutton family struggles to endure “The Killing Season.” Here’s where we resume with the 1923 storyline, detailing the state of the Duttons at the beginning of their second season.
Spencer and Alexandra Continue Their Journeys to Montana
Spencer persists in making his way back to Montana, finding work on a ship and developing a bond with a young Italian newcomer named Luca. However, upon learning that one of his crewmates had cruelly mistreated Luca, Spencer retaliates by beating the offender. Overwhelmed, Luca contemplates suicide. Once more demonstrating his protective instincts, Spencer intervenes and manages to persuade Luca to carry on living.
Alexandra, much like trying to flee from England, yearns to go to Montana, longing for freedom from her imprisonment. Alexandra realizes that she needs to depart before the evidence of her pregnancy becomes apparent, but the bleakness of her predicament has left her shattered. Eventually, Alexandra attempts to purchase a ticket to the U.S., but her options are limited to first-class or tourist travel. She chooses the latter, which Jennifer (Joe Ellen Pellman) refers to as “thieves and beggars.
Jacob and Cara Dutton Can’t Escape the Wolves and Lions
In Episode 1, Jacob Dutton encounters a mountain lion on his porch at the start. He doesn’t want to harm the lion but also doesn’t wish to be endangered himself, mirroring many situations in his life. The lion scampers off, yet other dangers persist, and the lion remains as well. It is Cara who must take action and kill the mountain lion when it menaces Elizabeth Strafford (Michelle Randolph), Jacob’s fiancée.
Jacob and Cara discuss their neighbor who has a phone at home, which might be useful for Jacob when he needs to contact Cara and reassure her. This discussion serves as another indication that, no matter where he goes, Jacob’s safety is always at risk.
In this rephrased version, here are the key characters and their brief introductions:
1. Donald Whitfield (Timothy Dalton), a ruthless businessman, is subtly hinted at, waiting in the wings for his opportunity regarding the Dutton’s land.
2. Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn) appears as the Duttons’ formidable Scottish opponent, keeping watch from a distance.
Later on, Jacob visits the Bozeman speakeasy and engages in conversation with Sheriff McDowell (Robert Patrick). Their discussion revolves around taxes, serving as a reminder of the ongoing financial troubles for the Duttons. However, their dialogue provides the most amusing interplay within the episode. McDowell shares some news about a supposed speakeasy in town and, when Jacob enquires if the lawman has found it yet, McDowell playfully replies that he’s still on the hunt for it.
The investigation’s just getting started… These things take a while.
Teonna Rainwater Remains on the Run From the Law and the Church Alike
In Season 1, Aminah Nieves, known as Teonna Rainwater, escaped an abusive Indian residential school following the death of Sister Mary, a nun. Later, Father Renaud (Sebastian Roche) and Marshal Kent (Jamie McShane) pursue Teonna as she journeys with Pete Plenty Clouds (Jeremy Gauna) and her father, Runs His Horse (Michael Spears). The duo eventually comes across a group of Native Americans, but they discover that none of them are from the Crow Nation. Despite this, Kent viciously assaults several individuals. Renaud intervenes, showing the complex and contradictory nature of his character as both a cruel and benevolent churchman.
Following their discussion about engagement with Pete Plenty Clouds, Teonna decides to take an alternative route towards commitment from him before any formal wedding ceremony. However, their moment is disrupted by a rider on horseback who enlightens Pete that they are currently in Texas. The man claims the area belongs to a friendly rancher, but it’s yet to be verified whether this is truly accurate.
I’d like to acknowledge that the series honored Cole Brings Plenty, who brought Pete Plenty Clouds to life during the initial season. Regrettably, he departed in April 2024.
In numerous aspects, the opening episode of the second season in 1923 builds upon the events of the first, yet this is not a negative development. Titled “The Killing Season,” this episode acts as a poignant recapitulation of the hardships endured by the Dutton family and others, offering hints about potential future directions.
As 1883’s Elsa Dutton (Isabel May) explains in her narration,
During winter, predators among us target the vulnerable and less intelligent. Only the toughest animals manage to endure it. Winter is a period dominated by wolves and lions, where weak or inexperienced creatures often become food. However, once spring arrives, new life emerges, and nature gets another chance, as if guided by a higher power.
