When she discovers that her friend Simon (Kristian Ventura) is the sole living individual capable of perceiving and communicating with her, it bolsters her determination. Additionally, since Maddie is the first spirit who can interact with a living person, the other ghosts suspect there may be something unique about her.

As Maddie delves deeper into her mission to uncover the truth, her bonds with her teenage companions intensify. Charley (Nick Pugliese), the initial spirit to connect with Maddie, passed away in the ’90s due to a peanut allergy after forgetting his EpiPen at home. Wally (Milo Manheim) met his end in 1984 during a Friday night football game. Later on, Wally develops feelings for Maddie, but we’ll save that for another time. Lastly, Rhonda (Sarah Yarkin), the skeptical teenage spirit, died in the early ’60s. Although each death is heartbreaking, Rhonda’s story holds a special sadness as it involves an adult she placed her trust in.

Who Was Responsible for Rhonda’s Death in ‘School Spirits’?

At Split River High School, Rhonda, being one of the oldest spirits there, is often seen as the most disillusioned among her peers. Known for her skepticism, she’s been around for 50 years and appears unfazed by most things. Unlike many others who long to progress, Rhonda seems more resolute than anyone else, tirelessly working to find a way out. To her, it’s not just an inconvenience that her life was ended prematurely; the fact that she’s stuck in the very place where she was taken is a torment she can’t escape.

Due to the difficult experiences she’s encountered, Rhonda tends to anticipate negative outcomes. She isn’t inherently malicious; instead, life has left her with a tough exterior. Throughout her life, it seemed as though very few people truly understood her. Tragically, one of those individuals was responsible for her demise – her guidance counselor, Mr. Manfredo, who in the end, proved to be someone she trusted implicitly and felt entirely secure around.

Why Is Rhonda’s Death So Tragic in ‘School Spirits’?

In the series School Spirits, every death is deeply regrettable and premature, but Rhonda’s stands out as particularly heartbreaking. With a living situation that left much to be desired, Mr. Manfredo (Ryan Dumontel) served as a surrogate caregiver who seldom received the love and attention she deserved from her parents. He pushed her to excel in school and motivated her to achieve greatness in life. During her lifetime, she held their bond dear and referred to him as one of the kindest individuals she had ever encountered. Yet, when Rhonda embarked on her college journey, Mr. Manfredo’s behavior took an unexpected turn.

Upon receiving my acceptance letter from Berkeley, I couldn’t wait to share my achievement with Mr. Manfredo, who had significantly boosted my self-confidence. However, his perception of our relationship was vastly different, and he didn’t want me to move on. When I came to understand that I didn’t harbor romantic feelings for him as he believed, I tried to leave his office. Unfortunately, he prevented my exit and in the end, took my life by strangulation. Mr. Manfredo was arrested and imprisoned, but his punishment failed to assuage the fury I felt towards him.

Due to past events, Rhonda tends to keep her feelings to herself and finds it challenging to trust others, often developing a more cynical outlook over time. Despite potentially forming strong bonds with other spirits, she generally maintains an emotionally distant stance. However, Maddie’s circumstances appear to be altering these dynamics.
