As someone who’s well acquainted with me, it’s no secret that I have a soft spot for anime. More often than not, this affection steers me towards the enchanting works of Studio Ghibli, and let me tell you, Kiki’s Delivery Service is undoubtedly one of my favorites in their collection.
Of course, there’s an abundance of fantastic anime not produced by Studio Ghibli. For instance, I could mention some top-tier dark anime like “Attack on Titan” or “Death Note”, or we could explore adorable and heartwarming ones such as “Spy x Family”. However, it seems that when the word ‘anime’ is mentioned, Studio Ghibli often comes to mind first, and “Kiki’s Delivery Service” continues to be a beloved favorite.
In a different rendition: Among other Studio Ghibli films, this particular one wasn’t initially my favorite, but as time passed, it grew dear to me. On a day when I was seeking solace by rewatching it, I stumbled upon a detail towards the end involving Kiki’s cat, Jiji, that struck an emotional chord so profoundly, it reduced me to tears and left me in an even more emotional state than before. Let’s delve into that moment together.
I’ve Always Adored The Movie As A Fantasy Lover
It seems clear that you’re already familiar with the story of “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, given that you’re reading this article. Since this film has been around for quite a while now, I don’t think a spoiler alert is necessary. However, if by chance you haven’t watched it yet, it would be best to take a break from reading here, find the movie on Max, and then return once you’ve had a chance to watch it.
Alright, for all of those who have seen it, let’s get into it.
I absolutely adore this movie! It doesn’t delve into the emotional depths of films like “Spirited Away” or the romantic intricacies of “Howl’s Moving Castle,” but instead, it embodies pure entertainment. In fact, if there were images accompanying the definition of ‘fun,’ a snapshot from this movie might very well be included.
Fundamentally, Kiki’s Delivery Service offers enjoyable viewing. As an avid fan of top-tier fantasy films and television series, I gravitate towards content involving witches, magic, or similar themes. Combine that with a lively young protagonist and stunning animation, and you have a surefire hit.
Beyond its fundamental premise – a young witch embarking on her journey to discover herself and her powers – it’s the playful tone that captivates you. This film delivers an uplifting feeling, making you happy. It’s the kind of movie that can brighten up your day, even in the grimmest of moods, a solace I have relied on for quite some time.
It’s a fun movie, but that doesn’t change the fact that it has themes that we can easily discuss.

But I Just Realized Why Jiji Doesn’t Talk Anymore At The End – And It’s Not Because Of Magic
To those who may have grasped this concept earlier, it might seem rudimentary, but let’s delve into the poignant moment when Kiki becomes aware that Jiji no longer communicates with her in the final scene. This revelation introduces a layer of complexity to a film I once thought was merely entertaining, revealing hidden depths.
At first, it’s revealed that Jiji falls silent due to Kiki losing her magical powers – not just in theory, but also physically. This loss has left Kiki feeling downcast because of her actions during the movie, causing her to lose confidence in herself. As a result, her magic starts to fade away, along with her ability to communicate with her beloved black cat companion, Jiji, who resembles my own feline friend in many ways.
In the final analysis, despite Kiki recovering her self-belief and her magical powers, Jiji remains silent towards her, or at least it seems that way. I had always perceived this as something she might never regain due to being without magic for such an extended period. This serves as a reminder that even when you strive diligently to return to your previous state, there’s a chance you may lose aspects of yourself in the journey.
Now, it’s become clear to me that Jiji served as a beacon of guidance for her when she initially ventured out on her own. He offered advice, but primarily accompanied her in her endeavors, hoping for the best to protect her from self-inflicted harm. However, he is no longer providing her with advice or showing her the correct path. Instead, he’s allowing her to explore independently and build her confidence, letting her navigate the world on her own terms.
…kind of like a parent.

It Reminds Me Of A Parent Sending Their Kid Off To Live Their Lives
Among the cherished moments of my life, one stands out distinctly: the day my mother and I toured Penn State, a school that would eventually be my alma mater. Initially, I had no intention of attending there. However, the charm of the campus won me over, and within a year, I found myself moving in. As I bid farewell to my family – particularly her – a wave of fear washed over me. Overwhelmed with apprehension, I broke down in my dorm room and wept profusely.
Essentially, that’s just how life goes, and it turned out to be exactly the case for Jiji. Parents are there to support you until it’s time for you to spread your wings and venture on your own path. They offer guidance and suggestions, but ultimately, they must allow you to take control and make your own choices, even though it can be quite daunting.
In my thoughts, observing Jiji not engage with Kiki despite her regaining her magic, I couldn’t help but feel a strong resemblance to how a parent might feel when their child goes off to college, or even just venturing into the world at large. They would allow you the freedom to explore and stand back, aware that now, you are independent – and they have faith in you to grow into the mature adult they envisioned.

And It Was Also Nice To See Him Start A Life Too, Like Parents Tend To Do As Well
Another thing that strongly evoked the feeling of a parent letting their child embark on their journey was the fact that Jiji didn’t merely observe as Kiki departed on her broomstick to aid her city and the world. Instead, he actively forged his own life with another cat, even welcoming kittens into their family.
Leaving home doesn’t mean an end to life as you know it; there are still many adventures and independent experiences waiting for you. Jiji perfectly illustrates this – once he completed his journey with Kiki, he was free to live his own life, which is a truly wonderful thing to observe.

Jiji Is The Kind Of Guidance We All Need Until We Grow Up, And That’s Beautiful And Sad At The Same Time
When we embark on our individual journeys, it can be frightening, yet we find a way to proceed. In many ways, Jiji mirrors this situation. He provided the guidance, the beacon that steered us towards the right path for self-discovery. Now he steps back and allows events to unfold naturally. However, he remains present, just not as actively engaged.
Witnessing him supporting Kiki as she pursues her path and discovers her purpose, while he lives independently – there’s a certain poignancy to it that’s both moving and melancholic. The bond of friendship and mentorship may have been relinquished, but in its place, Kiki has found freedom.
As a teen heading off to college, I experienced exactly the same feelings, and I’m confident that other parents have too. It’s surprising, but even an animated feline shares this sentiment with us. And here we are!
The next time you’re watching “Kiki’s Delivery Service”, make sure to notice Jiji, the cat, and how he aids Kiki, as well as all the other details. You might find yourself loving him even more, or maybe you’ll feel the same way I did and be moved to call your mom to express gratitude for everything she’s done for you. Regardless, the emotions will be heartfelt. Why not watch a series of Hayao Miyazaki movies back-to-back and experience all those emotions?
